Question 13 of my trials.

a) (3 marks)

Yes, the should indeed be . I realised this in the exam and used and made a successful proof. However, after the teachers realised they stuffed up badly, they decide to 'delete' it from the test, making the whole test out of 97. I think it is ridiculous that people who realised that there was a mistake should be disadvantaged and those who at least tried should get part marks. Every time we ask them about it they try to change the topic. It is absolutely bullshit. What do you think we should do? They are adamant on deleting it, but I find it VERY unfair, especially to those who did it properly (and realised). I can't do much now...except talk to the head teacher.

Either teacher teaching 4u (they're both ****) wrote this wrong in the test. There has been, in EVERY single 4U test, an error of some sort. Whether it be getting our whole last question from Q4 in 2009 syd grammar paper (wtf not reflective of 4u hsc standards) or getting a question from a textbook and copying the answer wrong.

What are your thoughts on this? Have you encountered utterly crap tests/teaching?

Yes, it's grossly unfair. Unfortunately there's nothing you can do =(. Take this in your stride and soldier on!

Why not alert the teachers during the exam?

We employed the people running the HSC to do a real 'mock' HSC. And of course none of them knew proof by mathematical induction. We foresaw this and all they said was: we'll make a note if there is an error. Now this happens.

My tests were pretty poorly written too. I just accepted it for the internals then killed externals.

It happens.

Yeah, not much you can do. It isn't fair on the other kids to keep it in the paper as they are doing a maths test not a general IQ quiz or whatever. They did the right thing.

It isn't fair to you if they delete it, but it isn't really fair to the other kids if they keep it either.

don't worry man. My idiotic teacher puts a question in our trials from a topic that we didn't even cover in class. AND she even said it wasn't going to be included in the paper. 8% gone then and there. :|

Nope, you can complain about it and have legit ground for doing so.

They usually consider everybody's mark and discuss it with the head teacher. Sometimes the Deputy if required.

Another scene of fuckery.

There was a MC question

If you solve with you end up with but this isn't a root if you sub it in. They marked 1/4 as correct.

Since people raised the issue that 1/4 isn't a root, they are now taking the question out, meaning people who 'solved it' properly will lose a mark and others will remain on the same mark. The relationships does not work for any of the roots of the equation, so the QUESTION is wrong. What do you guys think?

The only rational root it has is 1/2. The product of the other two roots is -1/4 ie: beta*gamma = -1/4.

Poor form on the part of your Maths department, two errors in a Trial examination. Just goes to show the importance of peer checking when writing exam papers.

Asianese, you are already coming first (iirc), so this won't matter very much at all for you. For others, on the other hand, I suppose it makes a little bit of difference.

Nevertheless, the actual external HSC exam is what separates the men from the boys. There will be no such errors there, so that will be your chance to prove yourself.

Yeah, I'm quite fed up with them. I can finally be relieved that there won't be errors in a test...
