Plus, if you live in GWS you get $5k/year and I think you can go for extra scholarships too.

That being said, my reply did not take into account the fact that graduating from the PhD stream at USyd actually will help you gain a place in the more competitive speciaties. Let's not be politically correct, do you really think doctors in medical research do 0 clinical work and settle for a salary below that of a McDonald's Manager? The vast majority of research is conducted by specialists who are obligated to do it, meaning a PhD will significantly reduce the time required to become a consultant.

USyd is more prestigous :p
(on my phone)

May be true, but a minor selling point at best. The research opportunities are sweet as jakaran pointed out, which really does come into use later down the track.

In any case, it doesn't really matter which med school you go to save for these rather minor (in the long run) differences. I've always dreamed of usyd med, the people are awesome, the course is great, so I'm a happy camper. It all depends on how much that extra year means to you.

If anyone has anyone has any further questions about entry/info re: usyd med, feel free to PM me. I might have taken the trolling a bit too far in this thread. :p. but gosh those angry, inflamed responses by high school keyboard warriors are fun to read :).

+1. I've always thought it's a useful precursor to help you get into a particular program? Could you kindly clarify =]
it will certainly boost your chances, but there are much better options for a similar amount of work. e.g. you can complete a gen surg training program in 4 years which counts for 10x as much as a PhD when you apply to the RACS for a more specialised surgical field.

The bottom line is if you get offers from multiple Med Schools, choose the one you like best. iSplicer accepted the USyd offer despite having to do an extra year - in the long run I don't think this will 'slow down' his career - it's about being happy where you are now. :)
