Is it possible to do the higher physics 1b (PHYS1231) course after only having done the regular physics 1a or do you need to have done the higher physics 1a?

It would most likely be possible (but you would probably have to be manually enrolled through the school of physics). However, it would only be advised if you absolutely smashed normal physics 1A (a mark greater than 85).

Tons of people struggle through the first year physics courses. You should only move up to higher physics if you just slept through physics 1A and got a High Distinction. Like 90% of the people doing higher physics shouldn't even be doing it. I did higher physics 1A and 1B and I got 69 and 73 for them respectively. I definately didn't belong in the higher stream, and I was good at high school physics.

Thanks for the replay, although i'm not exactly sleeping through physics 1A (don't think anyone is), its a case of higher physics 1B being a required course for my degree, so i'm relieved that i can still probably take it.

If you are talking about electrical or computer engineering then you only need to do normal physics 1A and 1B. They say that they require people to do higher physics but they really don't.
