This semester I'm gonna be taking MATH2301, MATH2901, ACTL2001 and ACTL2002. MATH2301 doesn't have any prescribed texts, but for the others I was wondering if people who've taken the courses recommend buying the prescribed textbooks. I ask because last year I bought the prescribed textbook for MATH1151 and didn't use it at all, and I don't know anybody who did. I also just read a random post in a different thread claiming math textbooks are totally unnecessary up until 3rd year. I did use the textbook for ACTL1001 so I'm thinking I'll probably need the ACTL ones. So.... which should I buy if any?

oh this is interesting.

umm, there's no textbook for math2901 (from what i gather) - just the course notes. so... i haven't seen the contents of those but i'd assume they'd be worth buying because they have like the problem sets and all.

can't help you with anything else though :(

I just realised that you're right and that makes my question kind of stupid. Well I'll hold out for advice on ACTL but I think they're probably needed.

Get the course notes for maths...your course might have prescribed texts but the notes might not have been printed yet so it doesn't show up on UNSW bookshop yet :s. As for ACTL2001, I think one of the textbooks isn't used much (don't remember which one) and for ACTL2002, I have no idea but you will definitely need the actuarial formula book (you'll have to use it in later years too..., I've seen honours kids carrying them around :\).

I don't see any exclusions on the Handbook. So probably not.

Well, MATH2901 together with MATH2931 can be used in place of ACTL2002 to gain the CT3 exemption, so I imagine there is substantial overlap.

Alright I see the formula book you're talking about (Formulae & Tables for Actuarial Examinations 2ED yes?). Still not sure about the rest. :/
I think garrry and someguy12 make a good point about overlap between MATH2901 and ACTL2002, so maybe I can do fine without the textbooks for ACTL2002 so long as I understand stuff in MATH2901. Anybody else got advice on ACTL2001?

I've got somebody named Mr Ziveyi. Is what you have the same as what we need this year? (Mathematics of Investment & Credit 5ED, Money and Capital Markets 2E).

I need some sleep. I read your post a second time and thought you said the textbook was from the year 2001, lol.

Too bad u don't have avanzi this yr, he had everything u'll ever need for 2001 on blackboard before the semester began. Dunno bout ur lecturer. I have the broverman book, 5ED. u wont need the "money and capital markets" book, if u want to have a look at it, there should be a spare copy in the library which no one borrows.

I also have the actl2002 prescribed txtbook. Apparantly its a handy book for ppl majoring in maths/stats and alot of ppl keep it even after 2002 (I dont do maths). Ill sell u both for $100 (combined they RRP for $250+)

also curious on why ur doing both 2002 and math2901. I'm no expert on this but like a previous poster said, 2901 covers what 2002 does, in my year people either did one or the other.

did't used much of 2002 textbook, but for 2001 they took questions from the textbook for the tut. 2001 book is a good one, if ur lecturer's still Ralph for 2002, then u can't really find anything would help ur final...
