Hey guys,
Ive been realizing that a lot of people are looking towards unsw instead of usyd. Why is this the case? Is there anything bad with usyd?....what are your opinions on it
is unsw>usyd? or usyd>unsw?
especially for things such as the common law/commerce degree

I believe USYD has greater prestige and is much more "flash" and "hip" etc. Its almost as if, "Youre not cool unless you go to USYD". That's the attitude in certain areas, according to people ive talked to. UNSW just doesnt have as much "greatness", according to some. I personally don't know which is better, I think for Medicine, then USYD, simply because of the 99.95 ATAR requirement, indicating perhaps limited and exclusive resources for students who manage to get into this course. UMAT isn't required, which is a bit confusing, at USYD. So in that respect maybe UNSW has something going on..? In commerce and law, USYD is also very exclusive with reaaally high ATAR cutoffs. So maybe just the ATAR cutoffs and resources given to stringently selected students make USYD a better place./ I wouldnt know for sure.

To be honest, that's kind of a weak argument considering that UNSW has similar cut-offs when comparing the same degree program across the institutions.

Macquarie has the highest ATAR cut off for Advanced Science, though.

Well if we are talking about medicine, then it doesn't really matter if you go to usyd or uws for it because of its job security. Your going to end up in a hospital what so ever...
But for commerce/law, unsw has pretty much the same cut-off as usyd but ive noticed that a lot of people still choose unsw on top of usyd. why is this the case!?

As you enter university you need to realize that university lecturers do not have a similar role to teachers at high school.

Academics are suppose to be researchers first and lecturers second. Promotions are based mainly on research.

Check out the criteria being used to decide who will be kept when academic staff at Sydney University are made redundant in 2012
http://www.crikey.com.au/2011/12/13/how-could-you-sack-this-great-man-sydney-university/
Also see http://www.smh.com.au/national/educ...nis-ranking-say-academics-20111218-1p0sw.html

Note in paragraph 1 Only those Scholars who do not meet onerous research output criteria may be offered forced redundancy packages.
Note: Academics who have four or more publications to their name over a three-year period are "safe"
In Sydney prestige is, to a large extent, based on the age of the university. Mostly the prestige of universities is based on the research done by the academics. Sydney was established first, UNSW second, Macquarie third. Sydney has had more time to develop its research profile.

Maybe UNSW has surpassed Sydney in commerce because the academics in the Australian School of Business have been able to get more publications in a top-tier journal. Academics are employed for their research. It is highlylikely that UNSW has been able to recruit academics with the potential to increase output and publications in Tier 1 journals.

Commerce degree program at UNSW is regarded to be more reputable, but I haven't heard anyone actually explain why.

If you are talking about BOS'ers choosing UNSW over USYD, realise that this isn't an accurate representation of prospective undergraduates. A much higher percentage of Asians visit these boards in contrast to the actual ethnic breakdown of the state and it is common knowledge that UNSW also has a high proportion of students with an Asian background. From experience, I've found many Asians are more comfortable with socialising within their own race rather than across ethnic grounds, so I've seen many high school kids pick UNSW simply because they know more people which go there.

Maybe the general impression is BA/LLB-> USYD and Comm/LLB -> UNSW.

It is because the Australian School of Business at UNSW has a better research record in Commerce.

UNSW was (and to some extent) referred to as the Kenso Tech. when it first started and was not considered a "real university". Then along came Macquarie University

By the way it does not really matter if you go to a particular university because of its research prestige - just go.

The main advantage will be networking which will help in your career.
It is a particularly important one especially if you do not have contacts within the field you are entering. This is particularly relevant if you are one of the first in your family to enter your chosen field. Remember there is a great deal of truth in the saying "It's not what you know but who you know".

ATAR cut offs are based on demand, not prestige
But prestige can be a factor for people's choice, affecting supply and demand, thus influencing ATAR cutoffs.
