Hey, I think this is pretty universal for all universities, so I decided to post it here where it will get more views than on the Macquarie University sub forum:

The degree I want to do in 2012 offers 27 elective credit points. I've spoken to someone from the University and they have told me that these units can be spent anywhere. Just wondering do I have to restrict myself to the 100 level subjects, or can I pick some 200 and 300 level subjects? Are the 100 level subjects perquisites for the 200-300 level?

Thanks.

Generally there is a prerequisite of how many junior units you must do before going onto intermediate and intermediate to senior. Often it might specify ONE junior unit to qualify for intermediate units etc.

There is no general consensus as these things are faculty-dependent, but if you check the handbook it should specify prerequisites for units, how your particular major is structured and any other requirements.

Your handbook is your bible for anything university-related. Make a habit of checking it if you aren't too sure about UoS selections.

You can take any unit you want, so long as it fits within your program of study and you meet the pre-requisites. Pre-requisites vary, always check the handbook.

Thanks for the replies guys!

I just had a look on the Macquarie website online handbook and I think I understand it. A 300 unit I want to study, Shakespeare and the Renaissance (http://api.prod.handbook.mq.edu.au/Unit/HTML/ENGL309/2012/9f9ef28dea630ae6311cc730207b2b59), has the perquisites of 6cp from 200 level. That means I'd need to do ENG120 (which is the perquisite of most 200 level English units) and then 2 200 level english units, before I would be able to study Shakespeare.

I am going to have to work out what I want to study as my electives.

Thanks.

You don't necesarily need ENGL120 to do ENGL309 (depending on the units you take). Not all 200 lvl ENGL units require ENG120, again, make sure you check the handbook carefully before planning your units =]

Spot on.

Always good to see someone planning out their units well beforehand. You would be surprised how many people fail to do this early on whether it be indecision or just plain carelessness and then they have to overload.

I've looked at the handbook, (http://api.prod.handbook.mq.edu.au/UnitPrefixes/HTML/2012/ENGL/9f9ef28dea630ae6311cc730207b2b59) and they all have the perquisites of either ENG120 or '12cp', which I'm guessing is 12 english credit points.

Is this all the units available? or are there more? Ideally I would want to skip ENG120 and not do most of the 200 level ENG units to get to the 300 levels.

'12cp' refers to exactly that, 12cp from anywhere, not just english units. Whatever is in the handbook is what is available, units are added once in a while, but not often. If you didn't want to do ENGL120 you could pick two 200lvl ENGL units that do not require it, such as:

http://www.handbook.mq.edu.au/2012/Units/UGUnit/ENGL200
or
http://www.handbook.mq.edu.au/2012/Units/UGUnit/ENGL201
or

or

Wait, so my degree B.Anc has 9cp in its first year and i plan on doing 3cp of electives in that same year, does that mean I could do those 200 level subjects in my second year?

Do you mean you plan to take 9cp of ancient history units and 3cp worth of electives? If so, then yes, you would have 12cp under your belt by second year and would be free to take 200 lvl ENGL units with 12cp pre-requisites.

Yes, I believe that you are required to take 3 units ancient history units for your first year.

Awesome. Well that makes it a lot easier!

Thankyou for clearing that up!

You are required to take 9cp worth units of 100 lvl AHIS, yes. You don't necessarily have to do any or all of them in your first year, though most people of course do because they are keen to get stuck into ancient history and progress quickly through their degree (by accumulating the pre-requisites required for higher lvl AHIS and elective units).

For example, if you wanted to, you could in your first year take:

2 units in 100lvl AHIS.
2 units in electives (that you meet the pre-requisites for).
2 units in AHIS languages at 200lvl (being in the BAHIS, you can bypass the usual 12cp pre-requisites and take these from your very first semester).

The point is, you can take anything you want, at any time, so long as you meet the pre-requisites and it fits with your projected program of study

I had been told that B.ANC could do the ancient languages in their first year, but I couldn't see in the handbook how that was possible.

Awesome. So if I do 2 units of 200lvl ancient languages, can I still do 2 units of 100lvl AHIS all in one year?

Ideally, in 2012, I'd like to do:

2 units of 100 lvl ANC
2 units of 200lvl ANC Languages.
3 units of electives.

Would that be possible? Would it be too much work to handle?

I had been told that B.ANC could do the ancient languages in their first year, but I couldn't see in the handbook how that was possible.

I assume from your dp you want to do hieroglyphs, if you look up AHIS278 Egyptian Hieroglyphs A and look up the pre-requisites you will see:

"12cp or admission to BAncHist(Hons) or CertAncLang or DipAncLang"

This means to do this unit you need:

12cp from anywhere
or
admission to the B. Ahis (which you have)
or
admission to CertAncLang
or
DipAncLang

Since you are doing the B. Ahis you get to bypass the usual 12cp pre-requisites. Once you have passed AHIS278 Hieroglyphs A, you automatically meet the pre-requisites for Hieroglyphs B "AHIS278".

So if I do 2 units of 200lvl ancient languages, can I still do 2 units of 100lvl AHIS all in one year?

Yes.

Yes, so long as you meet the pre-requisites for the electives you would like to do.

Would it be too much work to handle?

You would be taking on a full (4 unit) workload one semester and a less full (3 unit) workload the other semester. This is a normal workload for a lot of students, whether you would handle it is up to you.

Awesome! That's perfect! That's the structure I want to do then.

Thankyou for helping me out with that.

No worries

Just keep in mind this is what i know to be true from my own experiences in the B.Ahis and from what the hand book is telling me, you should still get academic advice when you go in to enrol to make 100% sure this is all good and correct (you will get compulsory academic advice on the day you go in to enrol).

It sometimes helps to think of Level 100, 200, and 300 units as 1st year, 2nd year and 3rd year units in a 3 year degree. You would normally expect that you will need to have studied at least one or more Level 100 unit before you can do any Level 200 units. The Level 300 units, being third year will probably require a number of Level 200 units. You need to be careful with how many Level 100 you do as 38/68 units must be Level 200 or above and 18/68 must be Level 300 in an arts degree. There are additional requirements spelt out for specific majors

It is important to ascertain how many Level 200 and level 300 units you need to complete to do a degree and a major within that degree
If you are doing an arts degree you need to look at

http://www.courses.mq.edu.au/2012/Undergraduate/Degree/Bachelor+of+Arts#WhatYouWillStudy

where you will see that
the requirements to complete this degree.

Minimum number of credit points for the degree 68 (averaging 12/13 credit points a semester)

Minimum number of credit points at 200 level or above 38

Minimum number of credit points at 300 level or above 18

If you scroll down you can find the major in which you are interested and see the requirements for that major
