I would assume they are delivered that day to the marking centre to start marking ASAP.

No.

Some of them will get delivered to the marking centre on the day but not all of them from across the world.

Initially the clerical staff will start checking that what the supervisors say is in the package is there and start sorting the papers into their different component parts for marking.

A day or so after the exam, or sometimes longer, the SOM, the examination committee and the Senior Markers will arrive. They will then take a day or so to go through some of the papers to locate responses at the different marks and agree on those. Then the actual markers will arrive. e.g. Modern History is on the 1st November but the actual markers don't start until the 9th.

A major reason for this is space at the marking centres as one subject will finish completely and everything be removed from that part of the showground and then another subject say Modern, will come into that space for the rest of the marking process.

I've always wondered how they get them from other places (across the world) to the marking centre
Do they send someone out to pick them up? Courier service? Trucking service? - srs question.

Yes, there are countries elsewhere doing the HSC.
ohhhh BUT it's only for students that live in NSW and apparently have to travel overseas for some apparently important reason.

The main reason for overseas is that

a) some school systems feel that our exams are the best e.g. Tonga/Cook Islands - one of the Pacific nations anyway (I remember their Modern History papers arrived on the day we were finishing the marking process) - the smaller Pacific nations tend to either do the HSC or the NZ certificates - saves them money and it is part of our aid packages to them as well.

b) some students are representing Australia/NSW or something at an international level e.g. we had a student in the Australian schoolboys rugby team some years ago - he was supervised by the people at Australia House - the papers were sent there and then flown back.

No you can't just go to visit your grandmother and still do it overseas as far as I am aware. There has to be an official reason.

I was aware of b) but not a) lol I thought the HSC was only for NSW students. Other countries would affect aligning and stuff? or do they do theirs separately? That actually makes sense now as to why they include that option are you an Islander / Tongan they put on NAPLANs and basic skills.

There are schools that teach the HSC to their students in countries like Hong Kong, Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore. They sit the same exams at the same times as NSW students. They have the same conditions eg special consideration, ATAR etc

If you have a valid reason to be overseas when the exams are on, you can apply to sit there, but you have to pay extra for couriers, security, supervision etc

Even here in Australia a number of schools in the ACT sit the HSC but not all of them.

I live next to a marking centre so I can tell you for sure the papers haven't arrived there yet.
