I think this is more likely to be the opinion of a particular group of managers, rather than company policy.

I can understand that it doesn't make sense to make someone who is under 18 a supervisor at a store where they would be required to do work in the liquor store, or cannot sell cigarettes due to legislative requirements.
Could be limited to NSW as NSW law is very strict on cigarettes (smokes to be hidden and can only be served on one register by someone over 18)

To be honest, I sort of wish QLD would implement something like this. I hate serving smokes! I'm worried that I'm going to sell it to someone under age, even though I know to ask for ID and all, but still it just worries me a lot...

Then again, it wouldn't be at all practical, as we would never be able to have a dedicated smokeshop operator.

And yeah I'd say that managers choose supervisors as who they see is responsible and appropriate. Probably not why they chose me, but you get my drift.

Gap scan cigarettes, negative SOH, complete Express Alert Nomination chart, review register results, review days grids (and allocate registers to operators), confirm with SSO/SSA that EFT is balanced, ensure trolley bay is clean and filled, ensure baskets are available, verify the managers board is displaying the right names/photos, check with Produce/Bakery Team Managers if there are any new lines that should be added to the WOWPOS lookup menus

I've probably missed out a few bits, but I'm sure others will fill in the gaps.

edit: I also print out the StoreLine reports which require daily actioning

It is not a nationwide legislative requirement that persons be over 18 to serve cigarettes, some states allow it. Also, it is not a store based policy in regards to mature aged supervisors, I have pushed and pushed and they won't budge, this goes for other stores in my area and head office also tells me it's against policy too, so I'm betting my bottom dollar that it is...

Routines for everything differ greatly from store to store, yet alone from state to state. Our opening routine is very different to bensneddon's.

Put the money back in the tills, self serve person opens self serve, change order, trolley/basket count, newspapers, plan the grids (registers for people to use), do stock or any other job that is needed to be done.

I would like to see this in solid form, instead of just being told, because from experience a lot of staff members say things they aren't always 100% on.

How did you get told from head office?

Under 18's can sell smokes (According to my General Manager whom I believe) and can be supervisors, but a under 18 supervisor is rare i believe (i have never seen one). The youngest supervisor in my store is 20, plus my managers usually try to keep people in photo lab, home entertainment, and supervision staff 18+ for some reason (I believe it is a mix of maturity and working hours)

I believe a supervisor should be someone who has been with the store for a decent amount of time and has the maturity

What state are you in? I know for a fact that in NSW under 18 cannot sell smokes. We just did the tobacco training for it no long ago (man I hate training)

NSW, I believe I miss heard and what my manager meant was that they can be in the service desk

So who's looking forward to xmas? I'm getting trained in the cash office then, should be good (something new). We get told not to be allowed to park in the car park or anything during xmas, but its only slightly busier than usual... cause we're in a rural area, there's no toy shops or anything, or an ideal location in our plaza that would sell good Chrissy presents, so everyone goes into bigger town.

Still, should be interesting. We've already started selling those santa lollipops that look like a candy-kebab sorta thing :D

Smokes can be served by minors in NSW. I recently just signed off on the tobacco training update thingo that comes around every so often and it stated. "Tobacco, where practical should be served by people aged 18yrs+" or words to that effect.

Hi guys, I've been lurking this thread the past couple weeks since it was the top result when I googled for various Woolworths stuff. I'm actually working at a Countdown in New Zealand (my username should tell you which city :)), been doing nightfill for five years but recently I got offered some hours in pricing so I thought I'd try to give myself a headstart.

Yesterday everything kind of got out of control and now I'm the manager of the department, and I've never worked in it. I start in two weeks. Anyone have any advice? Any ideas what my typical day will be like, what problems I might run into, things I might not expect? I know pretty much nothing, other than that I'll be doing maintenance (changes to regular prices), printing out specials tickets, sorting them and helping some part-timers put them up. I'm sure there's more to it than that since I'll be rostered 40 hours a week :)

I'd appreciate anything anyone knows, even if it's Australia-specific! I've already learned a bunch about other departments from this thread, nightfillers don't get out much :)

Is the whole department called pricing? or was that just what you were doing in it before?

If it's like us you may now be responsible for other related things like sorting delivery invoices, and maybe even cash management and/or payroll. (they're combined in all woolworths here, but might not be for you.)

The department is called Price Integrity, and though it is nominally separate from the office, my SM is looking to integrate them more, so that office workers can help out with heavy ticket weeks, and pricing can assist in the office if needed. I start training for office work in a couple months, apparently.

They might be just separate in my store, because the store is quite large? I wish I knew more about this kind of thing.

The whole reason the job's open is because the previous manager couldn't cope; she would end up actually throwing tickets in the bin because she didn't have time to put them up. Makes me a little nervous, but I do know the store very well (long life at least... GM and perishables are another story), I just hope there won't be any nasty surprises.

When it comes to office stuff I'll need a lot more help, I don't know anything at all :) but that's still a way off yet.

It sounds like how our stores were run pre project phoenix. We called it systems, now cash office and systems are combined into store services.

To me, it sounds closest to my store's Nontrade department, which basically consists of ticketing and office stuff. Woolies do like to chuck people in the deep end a lot, a few of my managers can vouch for that (luckily, they saved it from happening to me haha) but hopefully you'll pick it up easy as you go along especially in the office.

Did the previous manager have much experience with the layout of the store? If you've been there 5 years, then it sounds like you would know pretty much where everything is off by heart, which would be very helpful in a lot of ways

Yeah she didn't seem to really have a clue, whereas I have better product knowledge than anyone I know. Hopefully that'll be the deciding factor!
