Benefits of completing a combined law degree? (1 Viewer)

If i don't get into USYD or UNSW law, I'm planning to study law at UTS. But I was thinking, should I just do an LLB or should I combine it? I know UTS lets you do an LLB in 4 years, if I choose this, will I be at any disadvantage when considered for employment?

I don't want to do Arts (International Studies) with Law at UTS, or Business and Law, the subjects didn't really appeal to me.

If I get into USYD I want to do B Political, Economic and Social Sciences with Law, and if I get into UNSW, I want to do B Commerce (majoring in Business Law, or marketing) and Law.

Since UTS doesn't have these for the double, should I just do a single LLB? I finish in 4 years, and how will a Arts degree help me be a good lawyer anyways? Would employers look down on me as under-qualified?

Also, what are the avenues for transfer into USYD/UNSW law from UTS law? Must it be in the first year, or can I also transfer in the second?

One more thing, I'm considering doing the BA (Adv.) (Hons.) degree at USYD, and transferring to law after one year, even if I don't, I might complete the course and apply for a JD at UNSW or USYD after.

So basically, i'm not sure...should I do the Bachelor of Business and Law at UTS, or just LLB at UTS? Or would the BA (Adv.) (Hons.) be a better option?

Firstly, you really have to ask yourself, will 1 extra year of study really disadvantage you?

In all honesty, you will be competing against people with more than just a law degree. Whilst not the main thing (law firms look first at law marks) it is still something that another student has over you.

If you were an employer would you hire someone with a law degree of a law/commerce degree?

I know what i'd do, so for the extra 1 year I'd do a double degree.


As for transferring, you can do it in any year, however the earlier the better as your marks generally deteriorate (not for everyone). Also, the longer you take to transfer, the less likely you will be able to get credit for previous study, which means your 5 year degree could turn into 6 + years.

um just for your information, if you are doing commerce/law you can not take subjects in the faculty of LEGT i.e. Business Law components under commerce. Assuming that's what you meant by a business law major, the one in commerce.

Well doing straight law gives you roughly 8 more subjects of law to study and thus your knowledge of the law will be greater or you have touched more aspects of the law and can make an informed decision of which area you want to specialise in e.g. torts, contracts etc. Most Com/Law students actually do law to make their Com degree look good so they can go into IB. As for arts/law i can't say much since I am not doing arts... XD

Couldn't be bothered reading your jargon.

But in short, there's minimal benefits. An extra year at uni could cost you an extra $200k and could cost you opportunities not measured by money.

But go on, keep doing massive degrees and adding suffixes on to your name.

I cut my 5 years in comm/law to 4 years via overloading to save that year. If I had my time again, I would've dropped the law and did my commerce in 2. What a useless degree.
