Hey, im in year 11 , and am thinking of dropping from Advanced English to Standard, and dropping Maths-Ext1. This means ill have 11 units. My school was ranked somewhere between 125 and 128 inclusive, in 2010.

I want to drop english advanced mainly because, ive never liked english and shakespeare in particular. I have also heard that the aligning of standard compared to advanced is actually improving. My Standard english aim for the hsc is 80-85.

I want to drop extensions maths, because i currently cant focus on my other subjects as much and my marks arent that good.

Any suggestions please?

Also with the following subjects and predicted scores, what would be my estimate ATAR? Im aiming for 91+? :

Standard English - 82
Mathematics - 88
Physics - 88
Business Studies- 92
Engineering Studies- 85

yea i know its still not that good, but thats why im only aiming for at least 80.
Would'nt it still be better than doing bad in advanced english and as a result of the harder workload, also doing bad in all my other subjects too?

Note that paper 1 is common to both Standard and Advanced.

Yes paper 1 is common, but wouldnt that mean the difficulty would be equalised and, you still learn everything your meant to know right?
I could still ace the other subjects?

btw could someone please give me an estimate ATAR, based on the predicted scores?
and is getting 80-85 in std english really difficult, or is that only for a band 6?

NO DONT DROP ADVANCED. The difficulty between advanced and standard is minimal. In advanced you study more difficult texts, but the difficulty of the actual questions which you get asked on the HSC and trials is about equal. In my opinion, getting over 80 in standard is harder then getting over 80 for advanced english. Also, standard aligns poorly compared to advanced. For example, getting a raw mark of 80/105 in your HSC exam for standard might only align to a final HSC mark of 80/100. Whereas in advanced, a mark of 80/105 might align to a final HSC mark of 90/100. So really, in my opinion, standard english is a waste of time and potentially hazardous to your ATAR. This is especially the case for you considering you want to get an ATAR over 90.

I always advise people against doing standard. Ive seen many students who were really good in english choose standard and lived to regret it when they got their HSC results back. I will say this though, not everyone who does standard will end up with a bad mark in it. On this website there are two people who have achieved a band six in the subject. Its just that very few people per year manage to get over 90 for standard (64 students in 2010).

How long have you been seeing those students? You must be very old and wise.

Sorry if I sounded like an idiot, what I meant to say was that when I was in year 11 and 12, many people that I knew who did standard on their HSC ended up regretting it. Those guys that I knew were actually really good in english, but chose standard because they hated the subject.

I would have preferred you to be old and wise. :)

if you meant these would be your predicted HSC marks, your ATAR would be above 91

but these predictions may not be accurate as the quality of your cohort vary from year to year and you're only in Year11 so it's too early to say who's gonna perform better in Year12

about the subject selection, the way i see it is that if you chose the harder subjects, as people said , you'd get better scaling
But you may find the content too challenging so that you'd get demotivated and basically give up

and if you choose the easier subjects, you can actually do relatively well in them if you like them and perform well in your assessments and exam consistently
however, if you screw up one of your assessment or one section/question of your exam, your HSC marks would drop rapidly and the scaled marks would drop even faster, if you know what i mean

there isn't really one "RIGHT" answer to this question, it's totally up to you to decide which ones to choose
