Not everyone votes for self interest. I voted ORP for the upper house in NSW state election who hate welfare and public anything, despite me having a whole lot of reliance on all of these things.

EDIT: not actually dependent on welfare but it supplements my drinking habit and phone bills

EDIT: Lemme introduce year 11/12 Economics to whoever is in year 9/10. Lemme summarise the whole subject in ONE word: MARKETS. Why I like it? Because I get to learn about the implications of government policy on markets and how people respond to changes in the market.
