Depends what subs, but generally no

No, I know a few people who got nothing higher than mid/high 80's and got ATAR 80+

Yeah u don't. I'm one of them. I got 89, 85 and 84 in adv eng, bio and maths respectively. But my atar was lower than 90 cause i got 59 in chem and I missed out on a band 5 in eco, the latter pissed me off bad.

HydroRage got 1 band 5 I think (rest Band 4), and he got 82.XX.

So no you don't need a band 6.
