Hi Everyone!
I was wondering how people are or have struggled with acne during high school.
Because although I wouldn't say I have the most brilliant skin, lately, I have been breaking out a whole lot, and it is really getting to my self-esteem :/

So, any suggestions?

If it's getting to your self-esteem, maybe go see a dermatologist.

Otherwise sleep on a clean, fresh towel over your pillow every night. I heard it works but I've never tried it myself.

Are you using a good cleanser and moisturiser? Look for non-comedogenic, non-oily formulations. Also, are there any particular triggers you could avoid/minimise? (e.g. stress, certain foods). If you're a girl (sounds like you are), are you using a good foundation and/or concealer? Are you exfoliating and using a good facial mask once a week as well? Make sure you're not picking at or touching your face unnecessarily as well!

If you want a cheap, fast way to get rid of pimples--aspirin mask's your friend. Crush 2-3 uncoated tablets of aspirin and dissolve in a bit of water, then lather on your face for 15-20 mins, and wash off using a rubbing motion (aspirin's an exfoliant). You can use other things to dissolve the aspirin in, e.g. aloe vera gel. I prefer aloe vera because it's thicker so the aspirin's not running off your face. Warning though: it makes you look like a snowman gone wrong.

For scarring, maybe try vit E oil or Bio-Oil--Bio-Oil's safe for the face but it takes min. 3 months to show effect.

I had really bad acne in high school and i still have light acne until now. No one else in my year group broke out. everyone seemed to have amazing skin so i always felt like shit. First I went to the chemist and they just told me to wash my face with this special facewash and they gave me BenzacAC. They started me on 2.5% benzoic acid then i went up to 5%. It was working ok, but then i started to get reaaaallly bad break outs in year 9. I stopped eating fast food and other junk food. I started a diet of just pretty much vegetables, fruits, a bit of meat/fish and a hell of a lot of water. 2 years ago, i went to see a dermatologist and she gave me Duac cream to apply in the morning and RetinA gel to apply at night with 1 tablet of Erythromycin twice daily. This has worked for me really well. I have gone from heavy acne to light acne in 2 years which is good. Teens tend to get more pimples during exam periods as a result of increased stress levels. This is completely normal. For girls, make up is the worst thing that you could put on your face, esp if foundation is oil based. Other than that, see a dermatologist, frink heaps of water and keep your face clean.
Hope this post helps :D

Yes I was just going to suggest Benzac products. They contain benzoyl peroxide which is the same active ingredient in proactive. Use the daily wash and moisturizer and the pimple cream. Start off with 5% before you get any stronger solutions.

i had mild acne and benzoyl peroxide didn't work for me. in some cases like mine your dermatologist will recommend you go on a roaccutane course. it's not as bad as everyone says it is, but the side effects are pretty annoying. (finished my course about a month ago, still get dry lips)

I would highly recommend that you check out acne.org. It had tonnes of good info, resources, reviews, and forums discussing all sorts of problems you might be experiencing with your skin. It is important to be well informed and updated with the latest on acne prone skin.

Products I would personally recommend would be the Cetaphil range, and anything that is gentle for your sensitive skin and non-condomogenic. Avoid oil based products unless you know the oil is good for your skin rather than harmful (eg jojoba, emu). Avoid exfoliating your skin, picking it, touching it too much, as it will only aggravate and worsen the situation.

And my number 1 tip would be to wear a good spf 30 sunscreen. Believe it or not sunscreen makes a big difference to your skin during and after breakouts. Again, remember to go for oil free and non condomogenic. Look for ones specially designed for the face/

Good Luck!

Eat less sugar, and sugarry foods.
Eat less Oily foods.
Eat less spicy foods.
Wash face with some sought of anti acne wash or something like cetaphil, twice daily.
Change pillowcase daily, keep hair off face.

I know most of that's already been said, but it worked for me (along with prescription meds).

And don't pop pimples, cos that's how they scar.

Get some concealer. Apply it lightly enough so as to hide the redness, but not so much as to be obvious. I'm a guy and it saved my life, and nobody ever noticed.

It's better value for money than any treatment you'll get, and more reliable too.

EDIT: OH ALSO, place a fresh, roughly textured towel over your pillow case every night. Somehow this seems to work 10x better than simply changing your pillow case.

I agree (although I never tried it), that concealer is good for covering them up. But I wouldn't do it everday, just because it could clog your pores making it worse. I'd do it when you really felt self conscious about something (i.e. party, date etc yeh)

Yah I just put on the tiniest bit and it makes a massive difference. Worn it every day for the past year or so and it's proved a massive confidence booster.

Matter of fact I was wearing it the other day when I met you and the other bos'ers. I've got reasonably bad acne, but if I pop some of that on and take an over-the-counter anti-histamine it's almost unnoticeable.

You know what is an even bigger confidence booster? Taking medical advice to fix this already curable disease instead of wearing makeup every day.

So the guy that just admitted to wearing concealer for a year wants me to suck his dick? I would agree to, but who knows what kind of cosmetics you have on down there.

Man I remember when I had acne round about year 10. I was on roaccutane and I rarely get pimples anymore. Now I still have the scars though, and I haven't been using anything to get rid of them, I was thinking about laser scar removal. Has anyone tried this? There's also one for acne, in case the OP is interested. But yeah I don't get pimples anymore, rarely. Mainly cause I wash my face at least twice a day with Clearasil. I used to wash it with cetaphil but that doesn't fight off pimples. I also use duac every now and then.

I'm kind of lucky because I don't really get acne at all. On the other hand however, my skin is sensitive to shaving. When I do get a pimple though, it is usually the result of diet/stress, so maybe these are playing a part? Also try and clense your face on a daily basis because that will help prevent the clogging of pores = lesser acne.

Otherwise if it is really bad, I've heard roaccutane is pretty effective but extremely harsh on the body. Maybe speak to your doctor?
