well all i've heard from the opposition is that they will change the "focus" ie. get rid of the ATSI + Asia stuff.
I think maybe if they do this, they should also create an Asian studies subject as well as add to the existing Aboriginal Studies course...

and then the subjects will be more in-depth...

that's true - but there is no national aboriginal studies course planned for implementation. so we still retain our nsw ab. studies course (worst scaling).

but an asian studies course sounds like an okay idea in a way.

It's the VCE syllabus re-invented, like the re-invention of the wheel.

Arg this is not good. Seeing as I could have to be the first year to have to deal with this new system. Why not model if off the HSC? Everyone knows the HSC is more academic challenging and seeing as NSW as the largest population and generally the best results, why is the new system not more reflective of that? I dislike the the change in the English and the Maths. The names are stupid. And seeing as they only have a national curriculum for some Yr 12 subjects, it's going to be hard to align the marks with anything and compare. Consistency would be severely lacking. I think it is an awful disadvantage for someone to have the NSW education system for 12 years and then have to change for the last year. It's crazy and will probably disadvantage me. I live out in rural NSW and the teachers won't know the course in and out as they know their own course now which means people are going to end up cheated by the system. I think the HSC system is good and would only like to see it gradually introduced to every state to be first used nationally in 2014. Not to rush a dodgy policy in to try and win an election year. The education system was not that screwed (at least in NSW) in the first place.
However I think it would be good to eventually have a national curriculum however I think they are rushing it's implementation. It's not fair to have state and national things mixed together. Wow I really hate the people in the Labor and the Liberal party.
Is there anyway we can delay this?

you checked?

i heard many saying otherwise. i think that "harder 3U" is out.
Yes, I checked. And while it doesn't look like 4U inequalities are in the new syllabus, there might be some harder induction and circle geometry questions floating around. (ETA: But I'm not hopeful.)

I hate this >_<

where's politics?
where are the creative arts? music? drama? visual arts?
where's legal studies and economics?
languages anyone? Chinese? Indonesian? Japanese?

and maths is becoming easier? WTF :/

then that means more potential university science and engineering candidates are going to be disadvantaged at uni at some extent....

but i hope this doesn't get implemented in the first place....
This is only the first round of development. They'll be uploading language, geography, arts and other subject curricula later in the year. And I'm betting they'll be equally ick.

How can maths possibly be easier if they're including some 4u in a similar 3u course.
Specialist maths looks harder than the current 3U course, yeah. But take a look at the essentials course. It's so incredibly patronising that I feel like the government wants to give me a pat on the head for just being able to read it.

Pretty sure that if they implement this, it will have to start from year 11, so they might start it for HSC class of 2013, I doubt they will start this next year for year 11.

Had a good browse through the Specialist proposal, and I think it's much, much easier than 4u.

Seems more geared towards uni with the mathematical proofs, recurrence relations (these 2 changes will be interesting), stats, and calculus.

The matrices topic is pitiful, ie uni maths, but the half baked version. The whole topic is covered at uni in a little less than 3 weeks. Too bloody easy. There's no real potential to challenge students in the HSC paper for this topic.

As if current 4u integration isn't easy enough; they've simplified even further.

Overall, it's a mix of easy shit (lots of prelim and hsc 3u, and roughly 30% 4u) and strange/new stuff

I can't believe they want to make this the new 4u course; crap name they gave it too

I reckon it's easier than 4U (lol at the conics stuff) but I'm concerned for students of potential 3U level. The methods syllabus looks weak so students of 3U ability will die of boredom in it, but thinking of people in my 3U class last year and some of the students I tutor ... I dunno, I think specialist would be a struggle.

+1

hahaha, the conics in there is cake!

Found the time to look at the Methods draft:

Seems an acceptable mix of 2u & 3u maths.

Algebra and calculus components are ridiculously easy.

Shameful binomials and physical applications of calculus; not much room for 'conceptual/critical thinking' questions - eg showing/proving types. More about number crunching imo

Minimal inverse trig.

No geometry.

The applications of calculus to the physical world are downsized; overall the role of calculus in methods is heavily reduced.

There's no parametrics.

They've screwed up the notation of derivatives

They've added in matrices, stats and random variables, again: they're not too hard, but notation may be strange. Again, these are definitely what I'm doing in uni.

They've decided to introduce basic calculus in the 'extension 1 course' - I fear for the next generation; they're trying to raise idiots.

Methods doesn't seem too bad, it's still easy compared to 3u (induction was moved to 'specialist' and since this seems a mix of 2u & 3u, perms and combs are missing, as are series and sequences)

Overall, content is moderately hard; doesn't complicate your life as much as 3u. Only thing tricky about it is the sheer volume - a fair amount to cover really. Plus, since calculus will only just have been introduced, adapting to it will be more demanding.

hmmm but then I'd rather introduce another name for extension two maths and then add all the deleted topics or introduce other topics.

Sucks that geometry is gonna go away.... I love geometry, esp circle geometry :p

i guess some of the changes seem interesting but still, the fact that they made it easier and changed the name to "specialist" sucks

The new curriculum looks pretty lame tbh, especially the names. And if it was our grade that were the first to study it, I would probably be uber-raging at it right now. But since it's for the grades below, LOL SUCKERS

If the Modern syllabus is anything to go by the changes won't be great. I was reading it and thinking "okay, okay, okay, WHAT?" (more Aus history). And some of my friends doing ancient history at uni have been raging over the Ancient History syllabus because they think it's ridiculous.

Methods is Year 11 3U
Specialist is Year 12 4U
i think they left something out...
if you want to know. Check the syllabus's of each.
I think Specialist is easier than 4U even though it has 4U content but other than that +1. There is an epic gap in the middle and it's going to create problems.

I get the feeling that the NSW representatives on this national curriculum thing were either asleep or participating in some as-yet-undiscovered scandal (seems to be the way) when the frameworks were being drawn up because Victoria's fingerprints are all over it and we've got basically nothing. The English courses in particular look nothing like the HSC set up (goodbye 4U English, you will be sorely missed).

it may be delayed by itself. there is a good chance you may just get out of this.

i agree - the essential maths course is insulting, and i thought general was bad!
specialist is between 3U and 4U aye?

if they did it would only be "trialed". no idea how that would work with credentials. sucks to be the first year for implementation.
Too many maths with complicated names, why don't with just keep with the system with have now? I don't hear anyone complain about it
yeah, it should have been completely modelled off NSW's HSC. instead they only took our science and history courses and went completely crazy with maths and english.
and their saying you can take more than one subject course eg. methods + specialist.
are there any units?

Why would they scrap and make a new syllabus when they have already invested so much time and effort to this current one so specific? It's fucking stupid if you ask me. I enjoy the HSC as it is. I feel sorry for generations to have it "dummed down" for them.

i agree. rudd said himself "back to basics". 'basics' meaning absolute retards can get higher school credetation. WTF.

essential english and essential maths are pathetic jokes.

they have oversimplified K-12 maths.

and the corruption of this all roots from the fact that this national curriculum was made by victorians.
