My firends laptop went like this. He never figured out how to fix it. I would say reformatting would be the simplest way to ensure that you fix the problem. After you follow Phoenix's reccomdation though.

Ad dont use DVDs. get a portable hdd

cbf looking at the other threads.

When was the last time you did a defrag? What programs operate on start up?
etc.

If you have a cheapish laptop, you need to keep it nice and clean.

try
ctrl alt del > performance > CPU usage %

i once had this problem, my usage was over 36%, i think its meant to stay at around 5-10%.
If % is over 20, theres a problem, try deleting some virtual memory
+ wat everyone else is saying (defrag, etc..)

Its system lag, check your RAM, it might have died.

mamoz had a look at my laptop today =/

she said my RAM is fine..

but my CPU is off the charts. fluctuates from 20% to 100% =S

so she told me to end some processes. i did. and it made no difference.

now wat?

so 1. defrag

wat else?

Did you look in task manager at which processes were using the CPU intensively?
