MATHS for PSYCHOLOGY?!?! :S (1 Viewer)

the subjects for pschology 'needed' as far as im concerned are

Mathematics; and
Biology

What level of mathematics does this mean. Would General suffice???
Please respond ASAP as this will help me out in my choice whether to drop down to general from 2 unit or not. Dont just view this, REPOND PLEASE.

I have a friend who is doing psychology at Macquarie University, and she did general mathematics. So it should be fine.

usually when the UAC guides (or others) say 'Mathematics' is assumed knowledge, it means 2 unit maths.

should be ok though.

so now that we have established that general will do (and if anyone knows why it says 'Mathematics', or why theres a lot of statistics - how it relates... - please answer)

what are people's thoughts on general maths and the ATAR as opposed to 2 unit...?

Depends how much you apply yourself and how well you do in general maths. I think most people fear general will pull them down but if you do well it won't.

I haven't done maths in uni but from what I've seen, the maths gets more difficult at a rapid rate, so you're just gonna have to make sure you attend all lectures and tutes, apply yourself, ask questions and consider a tutor.

"Assumed knowledge" is actually very vague. You do some stats, but most of will be new stuff to anyone, even the 4-unit people, so lots of highschool maths won't be a big bonus.

General will be fine. If you struggle with any course you may just need to put some more effort in, but your current knowledge would be more than adequate.

You can look up what courses you'll actually be doing in first year here.

As you can see, STAT1070 is the only 'maths' course you'll be doing. Look at the course handbook for that, topics look very much just like building on year 10 maths/general maths. In the assumed knowledge it does mention logarithmic and exponential functions (don't know whether you look at these in general), but that's no cause for concern, easy concepts if you don't know them already, and they will probably do an introduction to them anyway.

One of my friends is doing a Science degree, with an assumed "Mathematics" having done General Maths for the HSC, and I'm doing one Psych subject as a part of my degree (assumed "Mathematics") with 2 unit Maths HSC. Because the General course is based a lot more on Statistics than the theoretical stuff we cover in 2 unit, she's finding the Maths easier to understand and figure out straight away.

From looking at the courses involved and just from my understanding of how the university works, after being here far too long.

yeah you still have to do Statistics and Research Methods for Psychology as a subject in second year which is a stats subject. hence lots of statistical equations and such.

iRuler you have no idea how much I want to. However I have a lot of health problems which make it pretty much impossible due to the availability of specialist doctors. Once I move out of home I'm not covered on my dad's teachers health fund account, and the public system is a bit of a joke... it's just not going to happen which sucks.

Parents are actually paying my HECS but won't help with accomodation. They think living in Newcastle is best.

yeah im staying with maths 2U advanced for now, but will drop if its gets too 'hectic', also the smae goes with english extension.
