They commit more crimes because they don't understand white fella law, and the police and lawyers make no effort to help remedy that fact.
Beneath the idiotic surface of that statement, there is some truth.

Of course many crimes are committed because of lack of understanding of the law. Which is a result of poor education, a common feature of poverty.

Half the police are still as racist as they were back in the 60s. Chuck a blackfella in the back of the paddywagon for a day where they die of the 60 degree heat. That's their philosophy.

Oh an ad hominem, awesome. You sure showed me, such an expert on the law hey. Protip: you haven't started yet.

It was a paraphrasing of a statement made by an elder from Arnhem land in 2008.

Richard Trudgen said:
"This research found that many Aboriginal people from Arnhem Land had little comprehension of what was happening in the legal system," Mr Trudgen said.

"This still leads to many outcomes that are unjust and can also be a factor in some people getting into further trouble.

"Many elders also believe it is one of the main reasons for increased crime on Aboriginal communities."

Mr Trudgen said the results explained the stark over-representation of Aborigines in territory prisons – currently over 80 per cent – and why increasing numbers of young males were falling foul of the law after moving to large urban centres.

"People thought that pleading guilty actually got them through the court quickly and they didn't go to jail," he said.

"There is massive confusion out there about white fella law point blank."

If you reread, I think you'll find I bagged the statement. Not you. Try not to be so sensitive.

1. I happen to have been to many places in Arnhem Land about 5 times. That article is fundamentally flawed because they refer to a place which is renowned for being one of the safest, most crime free and culturally rich Aboriginal communities. So I guess understanding of the law is not the key anymore. Next point?

2. It's news.com.au, shittest news source in Australia.

3. Please don't be so smug. I may not have much legal experience. But I evidently have much more practical experience than your good self.

4. The opinions of one elder are not and should not be taken as representative of the prevailing attitude of Aborigines anywhere. Nor should the findings of some report.

I wasn't taking the report as being the word of god, I am suggesting that the the ongoing cultural clash and inherent racism of the police force in these areas is a massive part of the problem. I simply worded it in slang that would not be uncommon for someone in these areas.

The fact it's from news.com.au doesn't make it untrue (though I wouldnt take any of the reader's comments seriously).

I agree with your assessment almost entirely and yet you continue to attack me, so I guess your practical experience doesn't account for much.

You first paragraph is spot on. Kudos.

There was obviously some miscommunication. But from your initial points it just seemed like you were attacking Aborigines like half the people in this thread. If you're not, I humbly beg your forgiveness.

I fail to see how my supposed aggression nullifies the experience I have.

I disagreed with the opinions I thought you were presenting, so I argued against them.

I would not say I am entirely sympathetic to them, and in many cases believe they do harm their own advancement (I don't mean assimilation, I mean in areas like life expectancy, crime, substance abuse), the governments of both the past and present are certainly not blameless, though.
