you left out the word "afford" in that post

unless private education is just like public education
Maybe people could afford a whole lot more if half their income wasn't being stolen from them, and the price of education wasn't being inflated by subsidies and powerful teachers unions.

Not to mention education could be provided a lot more cheaply and efficiently if minimum hours of class time and useless programs like sport were no longer mandatory.

The irony is, in the public system, the poorest people are forced to go to the worst schools where they get a sub-standard education anyway.

Because sport is useless? I would rather pay more to go to a school where I learnt more than just the BOS syllabus, and had the opportunity to develop through stuff like Duke of Ed, sport, cadets etc.
He's saying the BOS syllabus is stupid as well, dude.

and I'm saying you should have the opportunity to go to a school that has a heavy emphasis on sports if that's what you want.

I'm just saying that forcing kids to do sport is a waste of time and resources, and they don't participate properly anyway.

??

oh right sorry missed that.

no I think it's a good idea to make sport compulsory, but, like you said, it costs a lot to implement such a policy. and people do participate fully - yes, there is a minority who don't, but from what I could tell, it's like 20 kids in the entire school.
Well if its only a minority, then it shouldn't be a problem as most kids will choose to participate anyway, and most parents would want it.

All I'm saying is that the government shouldn't force people to do it, because they just waste everybody's time. That's the basis of most libertarian theory, apart from being morally wrong, forcing people to do things for "their own good" simply doesn't work.

Also, a lot of people who take their sport seriously do it outside of school and find school sports a frustrating waste of time.

sport is only compulsory in primary school afaik. i thought it wasn't allowed to be compulsory in gov secondary schools?
No its compulsory to do something like an hour a week right up until year 11 in public schools.

no, actually, competing at school level is essential for getting to elite levels, especially when going for things like national schoolboy teams.
Depends which sport mate. Also if you like a team sport which your school isn't very good at, then you're going to try and progress through your local club (outside of school) not the school team (if your school even has a team).

We had to do 3 periods a week till year 11 at my school. And pretty sure like 85% of the school didn't participate properly and then there was always like 5 dudes who were all serious and dominated at soccer over the apathetic/placated majority and think they are awesome.

Gosh, some private students on here are such conceded dickheads. You'd think $20000 a year would teach you guys some manners at least...

Ha you'd think that, wouldn't you.

Though this is an extremely pointless argument, as each side has preconceived ideas and opinions on the private vs public debate. It's good for the LOL's though :D

Some of the nicest people I know come from private schools whereas I know of countless dickheads and bitches who go to public schools.

I'm sure the above applies vice versa. These arguments are all making pointless generalisations. The topic is about government funding to private schools, not stereotypes.

On that, I think it's important that the government support the private sector of education because it does assist the government in return by providing, for the most part, well educated individuals for the workforce. They also takes a workload off the public schools and are better for the economy.

you might as well just say governments should use their education budget only on public schools to better facilities and teaching to produce well educated individuals in the workforce. private schools already have their fees and compulsory school donations to create well educated individuals plus alumni support
