There was someone in my Extension 2 class who wrote in their exam that sqrt(3 + 1) = sqrt(3), i.e. 3 + 1 = 3. I figure that the higher level of maths you do, the worse your basic arithmetic getsI dont trust myself with simple addition anymore especially ones that involve negative numbers! the calculator was the only reason i passed maths.

hahaha... brilliantmx1: my teacher was talking about radians. he had written 1 degree on the board, with the degree symbol. i stared at it for a few seconds and then asked by he had written one to the power of zero. i probably should've stared it at for a few seconds longer..
I totally agree, my ext2 half yearly, complex numbers question... 2x2=2... that one mistake then meant my answer was entirely real, then part b asked about the imaginary part of the solution... what makes it worse is i then went through my working to try and find where i made the mistake... but couldn't... it cost me 4 marks.I figure that the higher level of maths you do, the worse your basic arithmetic gets

Oh i hate things like that! Or doing a page worth of working and getting the wrong answer, working on it for ages, only to find out you made one of those basic 1+1 errors in the first line which fucked everything else up.spent half an hour being frustrated by a question in math and then realising that i forgot to press shift before finding an angle using the COS rule.
yessss! or you leave your calculator in radians when doing a degrees question and getting something very, very wrong - or vice versa. i have to be so careful in tests to always switch it back, although sometimes i forget until i spend 3 minutes working out why it is not at all working hahaOh i hate things like that! i'm the opposite, i keep it in degrees, and if the question says for example pi/4 i would just put in 45.. i'd only change it if it was a question involving radians where it would be quicker to have it in radian mode then convert hahaI've gotten used to keeping my calculator in radians mode all the time, and it sucks having to change it back constantly particularly in Extension 1.
