Do i still have hope? (maths fail=predicted band 4)... (1 Viewer)

well basically, i came bottom of the class for my maths trials (i felt so ashamed, i'm in 'selective stream' and got beaten by 'non-selectives'...).
my teacher said that my predicted school certificate score is that i'd be lucky to make it to a band 4/5...

i wouldn't mind if i'm not doing maths next year,
but i chose maths ext 1.

i'm worried that i won't be able to keep up.

so my question is...

• should i drop down straight to just 2unit maths?
• or keep it and see how it goes...?
• and with the one week left, do you think its possible to bump myself up to a band five if i study? :X (yes, cramming) ...

any other advice? :S

Keep it, and see how it goes. That way you won't be left wondering "what if". It's not too late to study now, you can get a lot done in a week. School cert is also independent from your school trial exams, so of course you can still hope to get a band 5. I hope you don't end up with a 79 or 89 or something like that lol. One mark off a band is frustrating.

just try extension1 first then see how it goes..if u cant really handle it, drop it then. But u cant do it the other way around.

What type of math are you currently doing?
5.3 - At least band 5
5.2- At least band 4

If you chose 3 unit you are most likely very good at math and would be able to ace something such as the school certificate.
THe school certificate is 5.1 math.

SC maths is nothing. If you have a half decent brain somewhere, try 3u.

well, since i'm in the selective class, i'd say i'm doing 5.3 maths.
so yeah, i feel pretty bad for failing it.

i'm just worried that i might have trouble keeping up.
though with all that said, the holidays are coming up...
so i guess it'd be a good time to try and study harder and keep ext. maths.

if you're 'failing'(although i do not consider a band 4 failure) what is your motive to do ext.1 maths?

Don't drop 3 unit maths, you can't do it the other way if you want to pick it up from 2U maths...

And School certificate is really nothing.... few weeks ago I was worried about my english and science but now I'm like meh... =P

yes you do have a hope.. just do a whole lot of past papers, helps A LOT

Aim high, keep yourself motivated, you won't miss.


The key to maths is practice, easily said then done.

Keep extension 1 maths, try it out for the first few weeks [although the first few weeks are relatively easy anyway] and see how you go

One week left? ample time for Maths and a band 5; Trials may not be a great indicator of how you'll perform in the SC. I received first place in Year 10 maths with a trial mark of 96 and 95 in the ACTUAL SC.. it generally works the other way around... was wierd for me. You should do a lot better in the SC than the trials.

Don't stress, teachers are probably telling you how important the SC is.. afterwards they revealed that they were bluffing. I came into the exam hall feeling relaxed, prepared and content with my study.

If you can achieve all three, youll definitely be fine.

Maths is my weakest link, so although I'm aiming for a Band 5 I'd be content with a Band 4.
Don't hit the panic button; stick with Ext. 1 and see how you go. If it's not working out by the end of the prelims, drop to 2U.

Apart from self studying, tutoring is the only alternative if your teachers are hopeless.

maths is one of the easier subjects to do well in, but it's such a pain to study for - it's soooo boring!

they believe if you need tutoring in a course then you are not capable of the amount of intellect needed.
and my mother hates the extension two english tutors...
I will probably need a tutor for extension maths anyway.

Thats the misconception i once believed as well but now i've realised it really isn't always your fault.

Isn't tutoring feasible if your school fails to provide competent teachers?
Tutoring MAY provide an environment more viable in fueling that urge to succeed.

IMO there certainly is no stigma of "lack of intellect" attached with tutoring.
Rather it reinforces that you have an assiduous nature.
