I'm really excited about this new course, as it means I've got a chance to get in (No UMAT required!!!!!)

Just wanted to know if anyone else was applying? Anyone know the minimum enter to be considered for the interview? Know anything about the course?

La Trobe's my last chance at studying Dent in 08 (bloody UMAT!). Still I'm not sure whether I'd accept an offer as I know nothing about the university and the course is new in 08 and still in the process of seeking accredition from the ADA, so there is alot of doubt. Just a couple of quick questions:

What's the overall reputation of LaTrobe Uni in the community?
What's the Oral Health/Dent dept like?

HI, I am interested in La trobe dentistry as well. Even though La trobe has bad reputation due to lack of organisation, facilities and bad teaching, I still hope to study dent there. The oral department is not as good as Melb uni, but...if we do not have a decent Umat, we have no choice apart from the crap uni, La trobe.

Not sure, best to give La Trobe a call. Quick 2 minutes can get your questions answered. Good Luck.

BTW for those who are curious, '09 ENTRY Cut off: Clearly-in 99.70 (ninety-nine point seven) UAI/ENTER.

If I were you, I will go to USYD.

Not many people accept La Trobe Uni as a Uni. (Maybe the worst uni in Australia?)

Why would you go to La Trobe to study... (too far away, very quite, no social life)

Try Big Uni. eg. USYD, UWA, etc.

There is no UMAT which is good. But it is too quite = no life.

Dentistry is not a high degree.

Thank you,

University is one of the most important thing in your life. Try Bachelor of Medical Science then study Dentistry in Sydney University. Not many people accept La Trobe as a proper university.

No, I'm not. USYD is way better than La Trobe Uni. This is a fact.

im going to say this everywhere awbeyona posts. she has no idea what she is talking about. she is promoting USyd either because she works for them or she wants to eliminate some competition (probably because she wants to get into dentistry at all the places shes dissing).
the course there is 7 years in total. other places (JCU, CSU, Latrobe etc) its 5. its a no-brainer which one you want to choose. ask youself this, would u rather pay 2 years of extra HECs fees OR earn 2 years of $70k pa salary?

it is well known that USyd dentistry/medicine is no longer as good as it once was. the methodology is old and not really accepted. this is where the newer universities have the advantage.
also, for degrees such as medicine/dentistry, it does not make a difference where you go. there is close to a 100% employment rate due to the shortage of dentists and doctors. all courses are fully accredited.

also, ur patients are not going to give a crap where you got ur qualifications from. they will know how good you are from experience/reference. you could come from the best medical/dental school and still get sued for millions of dollars for being shit. its down to ur personal ability not what university your graduation certificate is from.

latrobe doesnt have interviews last time i checked. they only interview the students who are borderline. i.e. on the cutoff. so say they had 60 spots. for the 60th spot, there were 10 people with the same ATAR. they interview these candidates to determine which one gets in. (they dont have enough funding to accept more than their quota).
go for which every university you want, they are all the same. if you want to do dentistry, apply everywhere. dont listen to peoples opinions about which university is better/worse.

I understand La Trobe's inferior ranking. However, consider courses independently. Dentistry at la Trobe requires an "ATAR" or ENTER of 99.7+ for a clearly in. There is a reason why it is so high; high demand. Would you like to quote a course from USYD that has those figures printed?

Regardless, La Trobe, while humble, will gain its ranks as more people notice the new courses offered.
They are even considering pushing for funding to open up a Medical program.

How does the reputation of a graduate dentist from La Trobe compare to other universities in Australia?. If I were to get in from QLD, should I accept, or do an undergraduate degree then reapply for dentistry at UQ & Griffith etc etc?

La Trobe has only run its Dentistry course for 2 years. There has been no graduates.
As such, I believe the reputation of all courses from La Trobe is determined by the university's overall ranking (i.e. not very well).

If you receive an offer to LA Trobe, you would probably have received another offer from QLD because it is more difficult, ENTER wise, to get into Dentistry in Victoria, simply because there are only 40 places in the whole state.

As mentioned above, Dentistry and Medicine are highly needed fields. Our employment is almost 100%. The only reason it is not 100% is that upon completion, some take additional studying paths i.e. Dentistry then do Medicine to specialise as a maxillo surgeon. These students will be considered as "unemployed".

Okay. WOW, only 40 places! That's intense. If I'm from qld, and have an 'okay' OP1, around 99.35 - 99.44, what are my chances?

it could go above 99.7!?

That seems a bit excessive.

think of the number of top students who want to do dent in nsw/victoria. i can assure you there are hundreds. there are 80 places in total between the 2 states at CSU and Latrobe. of course it can go over 99.7.
