re: Preliminary Yearlies Discussion Thread

yo yo any s&c peeps online, how would you answer a question like this?

Acculturation generally means that some aspects of one group's culture are absorbed by another group. What role does intercultural communication play in this process?

globalisation, etc?

ooh, interesting. globalisation-yep, but also how globalisation has eliminated alot of barriers to intercultural communication. again the adoption of western doctrines world wide.

i think that would cover it? you would just have to synthesize globalisation and intercultural communication.

what else? i think our essay will be on adolescence, i have a feeling.

thanks, good thinking. i don't think we'll be asked something like that, but it's always helpful to go over a few q's. i just found this site Preliminary Page which has pretty good definitions and a couple of interesting questions, too.

i've got no idea what they're gonna ask us - we have to do two essays, on one personal and social identity and one on intercultural communication. i think for the intercultural communication question they might ask something like 'explain the role of social and cultural literacy in avoiding breakdown in intercultural communication' or something like that. that would be fairly easy. personal and social identity is a bit trickier since there's so many different things they could ask.

oh thanks :)
I'm really not a fan of personal response questions, when given the choice i will always choose macro world and remove myself from the situation. Our last assessment task was a speech and interview on intercultural communication, somehow i doubt they will retest us on it. I'm keen to see what sort of questions they ask us.

I've seen a few other schools soc cult exam and they're so dumbed down. Some schools treat it like the most trivial subject, there's a really wide range in questions that i've seen. I'm really looking forward to the exam, i'll let you know what questions we get when its all done. I'm getting so pumped to start my PIP. Have you decided your topic yet?

yeah, we just recently had an in class essay on intercultural communication, but alas, must write another essay on it in our yearly.

what type of trivial questions have other schools asked? it's interesting to see what questions get asked in different schools. i'll let you know what we get asked too, are you guys following the HSC format (ie getting the choice of 2 questions)? we are thank god, i love how there's that choice.

at the moment i'm really keen on investigating the issue of heterosexism/heteronormativity and how this is enforced by either media, popular culture, etc. will have to talk it over with my teacher next term, though. how about you?

just very low order questions, rather than any perceptive understanding having to be demonstrated its just 'what is adolescence'. rofl. yeah im pretty sure we have the option, i do hope so. :)

i like that idea, alot. i'm still figuring out a way to work some of my idea's, primary research may be difficult in the ones i'm mulling over. the one that seems most likely is how language utilized in the mass media shapes our perceptions of mental illness. or something. haha im always changing my mind!

@aqua white, no need to be nasty, play nice.
