Absolutely, they should be allowed to vote against the coercive and oppressive government that has most likely locked them up for a non-violent offense that the fascist police state feels affects overall morality.

They should be afforded every means necessary to remove this tyrrany/

They should not be able to vote.
A criminal shows no respect for the law, those who enforce them, and those who create them to better society. Why should they get to choose?
Your idiotic interpretation of the abstract concept of law as an overall positive thing, regardless as to how it has been implemented, and as a tool to 'better society' is borderline fascist and disgusting.

What's the point of a fascist tyranny if prisoners can vote it out? Leave it to the judiciary bitcheraries

The amount of non-violent offenders in gaol boggles the mind and shows we are a society gone mad.

I hear the train a comin´
it´s rolling round the bend
and I ain´t seen the sunshine since I don´t know when,
I´m stuck in Folsom prison, and time keeps draggin´ on
but that train keeps a rollin´ on down to San Anton..
When I was just a baby my mama told me. Son,
always be a good boy, don´t ever play with guns.
But I shot a man in Reno just to watch him die
When I hear that whistle blowing, I hang my head and cry..

I bet there´s rich folks eating in a fancy dining car
they´re probably drinkin´ coffee and smoking big cigars.
Well I know I had it coming, I know I can´t be free
but those people keep a movin´
and that´s what tortures me...

Well if they´d free me from this prison,
if that railroad train was mine
I bet I´d moved it all a little further down the line
far from Folsom prison, that's where I want to stay
and I´d let that lonesome whistle blow my blues away.....

Why? Because you in your wisdom determine violent crime to be the only thing deserving a prison sentence?
Fuck - you
And your jew dogs!

Murder, rape, assault and theft are the only real crimes that deserve prison time. Crimes against the person and property.

The rest is just window dressing and judges gone mad with power.

Well when you break them down into their subcatergories that covers basically everything anyway.

What "other" crimes are there that are currently punished?

I vehemently oppose any further restrictions on their rights other then that of their physical liberty which we have already imposed.

I actually think that prisoners, among any other class in society, need the right to vote more then ever.

As free members, our lives are far less dictated by a system of direct governmental influence then those of prisoners. Since the government has ultimate control over how prisons are ran, which basically extends to ultimate control over the prisoners lives, then they very much deserve a say in who the elected for this role should be.

Any other arguments to the contrary seem to stem from the tree of emotional and irrational thought.
In the end, I don't have a definitive view either way, so it's great to get some other POVs.

You raise some very good points here. I mean, prisoners are one of the most disadvantaged groups in our society, with very little support given to them once they're out of prison, with the result being that many are institutionalised, and have a very high rate of re-offending.

I don't know how to deal with the issues of child pornography within my own moral framework. It comes down to consent.

I need more delicious Kieran on consent and agency posts.

I'm flattered.

Not really the right thread for it but I think that all porn and all sex is a question of consent - however I do not think that minors are capable of forming consent.

Yeah. Child porn is just wrong. Even if it's consensual. They just don't have the level of understanding...

Time for a new moral framework?

Framework removing coercion is a good thing indeed. Deals with the issue of maturity regarding consent. Which is why age of consent is 16. I don't think there should be any penalty for the possession of child porn, but I do think there should be a massive penalty for child rape.

Don't know how that penalty should work.
