Hello all,

Could you please tell me the marks required in each of my subjects for an ATAR of 90? I go to a school ranked 195th.

English (Standard)
Hospitality (Kitchen Operations)
Italian Continuers
PD/H/PE
Senior Science
Studies of Religion II

I think either Italian or SOR II won't count.

Thank you,

James

I'm surprised James. I thought you wanted to take English Extension 2 in Year 12. Why Standard English?

Getting above 99+ will be very very hard for your subjects, but 90+ is achievable.

English (Standard): 85
Hospitality (Kitchen Operations): 90
Italian Continuers: 88
PD/H/PE: 89
Senior Science: 93
Studies of Religion II: 88

Pull your marks all in the 90s. Some subjects may have to be in the mid 90s.

Your school is ranked 195... so for rankings, I'm thinking that you need to be in the top 3 for all your subjects.

Around 90~ in each subject will do. For a school of your rank, I would assume top 5~, or top 20% for every subject.

I did want to take English (Extension 2) in Year 12, but English Extension clashed with Hospitality, and I did not want to miss the opportunity to study cooking, which I love. English (Advanced) never really interested me, I was just willing to take it so I was able to do English Extension.

That said, I still might take Advanced. I'll have to find out what texts are studied in Standard and Advanced. So far I'd prefer to do Standard English because they study To Kill a Mockingbird and The Curious Incident... (which are two of my favourite books), and in Advanced it's Tess of the D'Urbervilles and Hamlet. I've started reading Tess and it's quite dull...

ahh so it all comes down to the fact that you prefer Hospitality over English.
I think it's a waste for you to do English Standard since you really enjoy English.

I chose English Standard in Year 10 and it was the worst decision ever!!! That being said, the texts in English Standard are definitely more interesting than those in Advanced. If you're really good in English, doing Standard won't affect you too much :)

Actually, doing Standard English will negatively affect you a lot.
Last year, 0.23% of people doing Standard English managed to get a band 6 compared to the 10.83% of Advanced English who got a band 6.

Also, are you sure you want to study cooking at school? I'm thinking it won't be what you imagine it to be. I'd rather do that stuff on my own. Only my opinion though..

Why was choosing English Standard the worst decision ever for you?

EDIT: I don't enjoy English as much as you seem to think. To be honest, I think a lot of what you learn in English is total rubbish. Analysing poems and texts for example. It just is not true that "the repetition of 'forgotten' creates a sense of nostalgia, which has the effect of provoking the responder to consider the nature of the author's past". On the other hand, some of the skills you learn in English are quite valuable, such as clear written expression. I also enjoy creative writing. But English Advanced sounds like a bit too much bullshit analysis for my liking...

Well, Standard and Advanced are marked with the same criteria and it seems the markers like what the Advanced people write. So maybe the bullshit analysis is what you need :)
