Call for city ban on four-wheel-drives

AAP
August 26, 2009 10:57am

MOST passenger car drivers think four-wheel-drives don't belong on city streets and consider them a danger to other road users, a survey has found.
Most passenger car drivers think four-wheel drives don't belong on city streets and consider them a danger to other road users, a survey has found.
They also want four-wheel drive owners to be hit with higher registration fees and feel intimidated when driving close to an off-road vehicle.
The survey, by insurer AAMI, found 77 per cent of passenger car drivers think 4x4s shouldn't be allowed in cities while 75 per cent considered them safer for the occupants but a danger to other road users.
Sixty-six per cent also backed higher registration fees for the larger vehicles.
AAMI corporate affairs manager Mike Sopinski said on every measure the survey showed stark contrasts between passenger car and four-wheel-drive owners about road entitlements and obligations.
"It is of concern that road users hold such strong views about their fellow motorists and this may spill over into driving behaviour," he said.

"We therefore urge drivers of all vehicle types to come to a better understanding of their common rights and obligations.
"Clearly all drivers share the objective to make road travel safer, so we encourage them to share the road in an understanding and responsible manner."
Ironically AAMI's research also revealed that four-wheel-drive owners made fewer insurance claims than their passenger car colleagues.
The company's figures revealed a claim rate of 16.3 for every 100 four-wheel-drive owners and a rate of 17.82 among passenger car owners.
The AAMI survey quizzed 2,503 people across Australia.

I think peoples shitty little excels and VE commodores with huge blindspots are more dangerous. Plus retards not being able to drive.

Also.

4WDs less likely to be in accidents, according to AAMI survey

By Ashley Gardiner and Megan McNaught

FOUR-wheel-drives are less likely to be in an accident than standard passenger cars.
An analysis of claims lodged with insurer AAMI shows that 16.75 accident claims are made for every 100 cars in Victoria.

But only 14.98 claims are lodged for every 100 4WDs, the Herald Sun reports.

A survey for the company found a gap in opinion on the contentious issue of 4WDs in the city.

About three-quarters of car drivers believed 4WDs did not belong in the city, compared with 19 per cent of 4WD owners.

AAMI corporate affairs manager Mike Sopinski said such a stark difference was concerning.

"This may spill over into driving behaviour," Mr Sopinski said.

"We therefore urge drivers of all vehicle types to come to a better understanding of their common rights and obligations."

The survey also found two thirds of car drivers thought 4WD owners should pay higher registration, an idea supported by just 8 per cent of 4WD owners themselves.

Two thirds of car drivers found 4WDs to be intimidating, and one in eight described them as the greatest road hazard.

Huntingdale resident Don Radisic has owned his Mitsubishi Pajero for eight years and believed it was safer than a car.

He has two daughters aged under six and said safety was a priority.

"I bought it because it is safer than the Excel that my wife used to drive, because she normally has this car," he said. "I have found it to be very good to drive."

He said he believed that many of the 4WDs that were driven in the city were "unnecessary".

But he said he used the car at his property at Daylesford on weekends, which allowed him to justify driving it on city roads.

Interesting.
Seems like a simple case of jealously on the part of people who cant afford 4WDs imo

I fucking hate 4WDs, or more importantly, the poor drivers who drive them (I'm looking at you, soccer mums - get a station wagon or a van, ffs, you don't need a 4WD). I can't see around them, they're intimidating and driven intimidatingly, and they have no place in the city.

I can understand if you have a child army, but otherwise I can't see the point in having one in the heart of Sydney.

Banned, no ... but I just can't understand why you'd bother. If I lived in Sydney, I'd just find myself a nice midsized car like a Peugeot station wagon or something

They will still be poor drivers regardless of what they are driving lol

Sounds like someone is jealous.

Also do people see a distinct difference from 4WDs (toyota landcruisers) and AWD/Soft roaders etc (klugers/territorys etc)

One is purpose built (to an extent) for being able to drive off road but still able to be driven on the road, and one is purpose built to have to road presence and size of a 4WD while retaining its poorer dynamics.

Whats the difference between a light truck being on the road in the city lol they are larger, more cumbersome and have worse dynamics. Should we ban those too?

Seems like 4WD drivers are safer than the average driver anyway lol

Bans tend to be problematic - maybe a tax or other market intervention?

Also why a tax when the drivers of them tend to be safer + they are more safe for the occupants + with the latest technology they are catching up to cars in terms of dynamics

maybe we should ban old cars too while we are at it
and ban anything larger than the median sized car

Jealous? Lmfao, I've driven one (Toyota Landcruiser and a Lexus something or other), and it's like driving a boat. Hate hate hate.

Look, I understand having a 4WD if you actually DO a lot of offroading/have a farm/whatever. But I'm willing to bet that MOST 4WDs/offroaders/faux-offroaders don't - they're usually families, as I see them, and women with kids in particular like them because they're big and pretty indestructible. Station wagons, people movers and the like are FAR more appropriate and far less dangerous to other drivers.

Tax the bastards.

More safe for the occupants, but for other drivers on the road? I doubt it.

Who cares about other drivers lol

Do you go out driving and worry about the welfare of other drivers if you are involved in a crash? Thats just dumb.

Lol omg i drove a plane once therefore i know all there is about the dynamics of a plane.
That is what you just said.

This whole concept is laughable. There are far more dangerous things on the road than 4WDS.

With this in mind maybe all motorbike riders should petition for all cars to be banned because they are more safe for the occupants than for us.

Taxation would be simple: Additional registration charge for 4WDs registered at certain postcodes. If people have farms then they can register their 4WD at the farm address and avoid the tax.

omg totally wtf strawmen lol imot bh

Great argument on your behalf also.

Source?? SCIENCE and common sense lol

Anyway.

Modern 4WDs are bridging the gap between passenger cars. I put it to you that a modern upmarket 4WD is more safe for other road users etc than a people mover etc.

Upmarket 4WDs are more expensive and have a lot of safety features.
People movers are generally budget bits of shit without abs probably.

Porsche cayennes for example would handle a lot better than your average passenger car. Landrcruisers have an amazing amount of safety features. Keep in mind a lot of money is spent on making these cars safer for pedestrians and other road users.

You can really say the same for kia people movers.

Why draw the line at 4WDS

Imo they are safer for other road users than many <15yr old cars. And safer than most people movers.

A lot safer than buses, trucks, vans (toyota hiaces etc).

This all comes down to jealousy tbh.

4WDs are expensive. People resent 4WD owners (esp soccer mums lol) because they can afford to spend the premium to keep THEIR family safe.

Hmm, I think someone is sore that they don't have enough money to own a 4WD. Why start the thread when your conclusion is foregone?

And re: people movers, I was more thinking along the lines of a Tarago, or a VW Caravalle, etc. Anyone who wastes money on a Kia deserves whatever accident they get into.

lol i own a 4WD?

Exactly. All terrible terrible cars with poor (terrible) handling and dynamics. Oh so people who cant afford the premium that the Toyota or VW badge and can only afford a Kia for their family (because they are being considerate and not buying a 4WD ) now deserve to be an a horrific road accident

you are a sick person and your argument is terrible.
