Hypothetical situation:

Extension 2 Mathematics:

Student A: 80% - 1st.
Student B: 60% - 2nd.
Student C: 50% - 3rd.
Student D: 40% - 4th.
Student E: 20% - 5th.

Does the school send the RANKINGS only to the BOS? Because everyone fucking whinges that "Ohhhhhhhhhh don't worry about your mark, your rank is all that matters". But what if the difference in marks is incredibly high, like there's a fucking outlier (Student A compared to Student B)? Or do they account the difference in the gap as well? If they send the difference in gap, doesn't that mean they send the marks anyway? This means that marks do matter, ya?

And what would all of those marks scale and moderate to with external results?

E.g. Student A receives 92% externally
Student B receives 90% externally
Student C receives 85% externally
Student D receives 90% externally
Student E receives 55% extenrally

The school sends the marks so that the BOS has the ranks AND the gaps. This means that Student A, who has dominated his/her class will be justly rewarded in the HSC. An outlier is not a dominant student per se but rather one that falls markedly outside the parameters sent in by the school.

The moderation would work something like:

Student A - 92 external + 92 internal (highest external mark becoming their internal mark)
Student E - 55 external + 55 internal (lowest external mark becoming their internal mark)

That sets the top and bottom.

Then the total marks earned in the exam by the remaining students (as the top and bottom have already received their marks) are determined: 90 + 85 + 90 = 265 (average of 88 per student)


Student B - 90 externally + 89
Student C - 85 externally + 88
Student D - 90 externally + 87


The reason for the closeness is that the relative gap (of ten marks per student has to be maintained) but because of how many marks they earned in the exam the available marks are very high hence the relative gap reduced to 1 mark.

This is a simplistic explanation but the best information I have ever had from the BOS is that they maintain the relative gaps between the ranks which is why school's are encouraged to use the full range of marks from 1 - 100 even though the BOS really only uses 50 - 100 (Bands 2 - 6). Sure some kids get Band 1 but there are so few of them that they don't even have a description of what they can do.
