I'm choosing HSC subjects in a week and was wondering about the process of choosing Mathematics Extension 2. I understand I only do it in Year 12? What do I choose now?

I mean do I do like 11 units in Year 11 and 12 units in Year 12?

I don't do Maths EX2 but i do Eng EX2 and it is the same process. Since you want to do EX2 in year 12 obviously you will need to choose EXI in year 11. Then just rank well in that during year 11 and you should be eligible for EXII for Year 12. :)

EDIT: Also yes since you are picking up an extra course in Year 12 you will have another unit added for Year 12. So i wouldn't pick up more than 12 units in Year 11 since that will become 13 in Year 12 if you pick up EXII.

You have to have a minimum of 12 units in year 11, excluding mxt2 as you can only pick it in year 12 but you only need a minimum of 10 units in year 12. To be eligible to study mxt2 in year 12 you need to be doing mxt1 in year 11.

So for year 11, pick mxt1 (3U) and then at least 9 more units. In year 12 you can then pick up mxt2 and drop a few units if you wish to.

EDIT: ekoolish beat me >.>

Thanks for the quick replies! Just to clarify...

I want to do:

English Advanced
Mathematics
Mathematics Extension 1
Mathematics Extension 2
Physics
Chemistry

That's 12 units, but only 11 units in Year 11. Does that mean I have to choose something else and drop it in Year 12?

...That's only 9 units for year 11 so far. You need to pick another 2 unit subject + a 1 unit subject.

That's actually exactly 10 units.
English Advanced=2units
Mathematics=0unit
Maths Extension 1=2units
Maths Extension 2=2units
Physics=2units
Chemistry=2units

Total=10units

But in yr11 it would be 9.

I did 12 in yr11, picked up MX2 and dropped economics, so i had 11 for the HSC.

It really depends on your schools policy, we had to do min of 12 in yr11 and min of 11 in yr12. You should find out what the requirements are at your school.

The way MX2 works is that u completely drop 2 unit, and just do MX1 and MX2 (2units each = 4 for maths)

You have to do 12 no matter what in Preliminary - that's a BOS rule.

Yeah, and a minimum of 10 in year 12.
OP: You will need to pick up another unit or two for prelim so you reach the minimum of 12 and then you can always drop that course in Year 12 when you pick up Maths ExtII.

Huh? So Mathematics doesn't count? Extensions are 2 units? Wah?

So for Year 11 I choose:

English Advanced
Mathematics
Mathematics Extension 1
Physics
Chemistry
2 other subjects

That's 13 units, then in Year 12 I drop one of the other subjects and do Extension 2 which makes 12 units?

If you only do Mathematics, it counts as 2 units.
If you do MX1, the normal Mathematics counts as 2 units and the MX1 counts as 1 unit.
If you do MX2, the normal Mathematics doesn't count at all, the MX1 counts as 2 units and the MX2 also counts as 2 units.

You can also drop both and have 10 units.

You'll have to do really well in 3 unit maths and get a teacher recommendation to do it

So doing both Maths Ext. 1 and Maths Ext. 2 makes them both worth 2 units? How does the marking work? are the scores doubled?

yes, they will be worth 2 units. Each score will be out of 100.

You must be recommended mx2 if you want to do it. As good as your marks may be, if the teacher doesn't like you, you can't do it. (at my school)

Do 3 unit first and see how taht goes.

Yes, 3 unit is basically doubled. It will appear on your Record of Achievement as out of 100.
