Rights group: Israel killed unarmed Palestinians

JERUSALEM -A new report by Human Rights Watch charged Thursday that Israeli soldiers killed eleven unarmed Palestinian civilians who were carrying white flags in shooting incidents during Israel's offensive in Gaza earlier this year.
The report says the civilians included five women and four children. The group urged Israel to conduct investigations into the deaths, which it said occurred when the civilians were "in plain view and posed no apparent security threat."
The group says at least three witnesses confirmed the details in each of the seven separate shootings.

"Two women and three children ... were standing in front of their home after an Israeli soldier ordered them outside -- at least three of them holding pieces of white cloth -- when a soldier near a tank opened fire, killing two girls, ages 2 and 7, and wounding the third girl and their grandmother," it said.

Defence Minister Ehud Barak has repeatedly insisted Israel has "one of the most moral armies in the world."

What's wrong with that? It's called Just War. The use of violence to prevent deaths in the future. As with most things in life, it comes down to costs vs. benefits. How many lives lost as a result of the action, and how many saved?

But srsly, sounds pretty terrible, although it could simply be a communication breakdown. Israel lost quite a few of its own troops from friendly fire during Operation Cast Lead as a result of communication mishaps. Or it could be like the American soldiers in Vietnam, clearing out villages and not knowing who was a civilian and who was an enemy (many of them just went crazy and shot everything) etc. etc.

Most of those soldiers were young men who didn't want to be there, they're not going in there with the attitude of "ok guys, as soon as it seems as the U.N aren't looking, kill all civilians" as seems to be many peoples perception. Indeed, many civilians were clearly killed, I am just saying this was more due to an overzealous air force than malicious ground forces.
