year 11 subject selection help! (1 Viewer)

hey guys!

i am about to pick my subjects for year 11 and at the moment i am definitely doing 3 maths, 3 english, modern history, latin and economics.

However, i am considering adding physics to this mix. I do not need a science for what i want to do in university and i am not particularly good at it but my science teacher told me that people who are "strong in mathematics" will do well in physics? I don't know if I should trust her advice though...but i am doing 4 unit maths in year 12.
and it would also mean i would do 14 units. Is that too heavy a workload?

na dont do physics if you gona do 14units in yr 11. Just not worth it.

you seem quite bright from your subject selection, 14 units won't trouble you.
I did fourteen units and breezed through the first two terms without any work at all (althought they are the easiest terms in workload and content)
however, i prefer humanaties to science but thought it would be a bright idea to pick chemistry.

Not so, i detest it. Pick subjects you like and the rest will fall into place. Just because you'll 'do well' does not mean you should pick it. Your more likely to listen/put the effort in/'do well' in a subject you like.

The maths in physics is so watered down it shouldn't be considered maths at all.
Physics involves 'abstract' thinking, if you don't understand why/how something works, you're dead for the whole course.

The teacher is wrong in saying that students strong in mathematics will do well in physics though, the skills required in both are vastly different. Also, imo, the concepts involved overlap, and so for me, physics was hard to understand.

This, coming from a student coping with 4 unit maths. (I subsequently dropped physics 2 months ago)

I didn't do 14 units, but I think it's excessive. Personally, I don't think you'd particularly "need" physics if you're not going to use it in the future.

I've heard from others that 14 units entails a lot of work, and dedication so I guess if you're not up to putting your head down and working hard at every subject (whether you like it or not) then I suggest you go for 12
And it doesn't matter what your teacher says, it's your HSC and you should be doing what you want. To do badly in physics because your teacher advised you to take it wouldn't be a worthwhile reason to jeapordise your own HSC, ATAR and future.
