Hey guys, this is my first week at UNSW, I am a new student. I am particularly finding it difficult to fit in and adjust. The people in my lectures and tutorials seem to keep to themselves and when I have an opportunity to speak and make conversation, I seem to get shot down. Everyone seems to know each other as it is mid semester. I'd assume the start of the year is much easier in making friends as everyone wants to meet knew people. Not so the case here.

Does it take time or what am I doing wrong. It's difficult :(

It takes time but it also takes effort. Also, what you're doing isn't wrong.

Unfortunately, it is much harder to make friends after semester 1 and also after many people's first year of university.

At this stage, majority of students would've formed their own groups and I find for many, they just get tired of having to say "What's your name/what are you doing/etc. etc". There is a limit to going through the motions of socialising with randoms for the first time.

You're right though, its hard and people in Sydney as a whole aren't that welcoming and necessarily friendly to begin with. (I don't know whether you're a local or international student?)

Hi MooshyMoosh,
yes I got into mid year entry. My first week at the university was okay. Could be better if I knew a few people but I get through the day. I am studying Social Sciences.

The university is pretty vast. Today I had a lecture in Central Block building (roughly in the middle of the university) and straight after that I had to walk for almost 1km to catch my next lecture which was in the Bio Med building (at the very back on the uni). I was late 5 minutes but I will have to do.

How about you? Have you started classes yet?

I am a local student but I tend to be very self conscious. But yes, I do agree with your points.

No wonder you're finding it difficult....

I used to do social science (combined with economics) back in first year but I dropped it immediately after one semester.

I despised the arts faculty.

I despised how it lacked the cohesion and social culture of law/commerce/engineering/medicine. In other words, I always found it infinitely harder to make friends than in a com/eco tutorial. Reason being that there was sense of community because most com/eco students did the same first year subjects and it was already something to talk about. Arts students are all over the place with their degrees so establishing a common link was harder to do sometimes.

I also despised the people I had to be around. Collection of the most random individuals possible. A lot of people I just didn't like or couldn't possible talk to. That's the nature of arts though.

You'll make friends, mate. But I assure you, not as many as you could've made in another faculty altogether. I'm biased as fuck but that's just my experience of 3 years of uni. If you've got the time/effort, join a revue or do yellow shirts.

They're good places to start.

it's normal - it's hard adjusting to new friends when you probably have your old social group/are used to calling each other out.

it'll come mate. i'm still stuck with my high school friends, but ive of coursed made a few 'hey mate hwos it going' friends.

I guess so.. But now it's getting to a point where I am not enjoying uni, reluctant to go to tutorials etc... Oh well, gotta harden up :p

p.s, is it just me, or is there a disturbing number of guys wearing super skinny jeans??? I'm just amazed with some of the thin legs I've seen at my time here.

but in the end, as you said, you have to harden up...

to be frank though, quit bitching and man up. many others will be in a similar position to you. uni is not meant to be comfortable at first. thats why you throw yourself into the deep end and make it comfortable.

my main point - man the fuck up! haha

I agree, u have to toughen up in a university environment. I did my first semester studying Business at UWS this year, and I found it really difficult to cope with a different learning style, having nobody to talk to etc... I knew people in my classes, but in the end I grew distant to them nearing exam time-I'm pretty much used to isolation now. The main reason that I found it hard there was because I absolutely loathed business (parents made me do it over arts/science :burn:), which probably explained why I didn't meet/get along with many people (THEY knew what they were doing, I didn't).

Oh, and SFinspires, I'm starting next year in sem 1, so no, haven't started classes yet :headbang:

It's also his (wrong turn) bday!

Probably out celebrating now or sitting in front of his screen, flexing his e-muscles.
