Hi Guys,
Im in Year 11 this year and have always wanted to do veterinary science specialising in equines. My dad used to be a vet and weve always had animals including a horse (who cost me $120 for the chiro today haha) so I dont think its one of those 'stages' of career choice. The problem is I live in the inner west of Sydney so am not at all rural. I am capable of getting an ATAR/UAI of 90 if I knuckle down and my dream is to live somewhere semi-rural. I will be doing Bio Chem PD 2U Eng and Math next year. But I need some help:
1) What are my chances of getting in? and also
2) How can I increase my chancesof acceptance?

Id realllly appreciate any advice you can give me.
Thankyou :)

seriosly? live in a rural area, apply for special consideration and get bonus points.

if u cant do that, then get uai of 95 should get u in vet easy. 90 is touch n go.

You apply before you get ATARs because you'll need to do an interview in December and submit a questionnaire. So if you do well for the next term and put in your application and a kick arse questionnaire and interview, it probably wont matter as much if you don't get exactly 90.

It may have changed, but look at early entry too. When I did my HSC, Vet Science was offered as early entry (a friend got in that way without her UAI).

Otherwise apply for a Bachelor of Animal Science at CSU and if you do well, apply for a transfer into vet science. The course structure in first yr animal science is very similar to vet science ...

Animal Science
ASC110 Introduction to Animal Science
ASC221 Animal Genetics
BIO100 Concepts of Biology
CHM104 Chemistry 1A

Session 2
ASC111 Animal Anatomy
ASC171 Animal Physiology
CHM107 Chemistry 1B
VSC112 Animal Behaviour and Welfare

Year one
Session 1
ASC221 Animal Genetics
BIO100 Concepts of Biology
CHM102 Veterinary Chemistry
VSC110 Animal Production
VSC119 Veterinary Practice 1 (0 points commenced)

Session 2
PSC360 Pastures and Rangelands
STA201 Scientific Statistics
VSC112 Animal Behaviour and Welfare
VSC119 Veterinary Practice 1 (completed)
VSC120 Veterinary Case Studies

So when you transfer you'll still have to do those first year vet science subjects, but you should get credits for animal genetics and concepts of biology. Veterinary Practice, VSC119 is a practical component, one day a week or something in first year.

Alternatively, send in an info request and explain your situation and they'll be able to advise you on the best way to apply.

Contact CSU . Charles Sturt University
Yeah apparently the first yr vet chem bio genetics etc are way harder than animal science or something idk

basically like 400-500 kids apply each year and like 60 get in.

90 isn't really touch and go, and they can't just move to a rural area and apply

I'd be suprised if Sydney inner west didn't count, esp. if the blue mountains count. I'll look it up though.
well if she moves NOW, technically she wont be consdiered 'rural' however at the interview she would have an advantage over city students who have never lived in rural area or never intend to after they graduate.

Both Dad and I want to move out of the city but its just not feasible for the rest of my family, so unfortunately Im stuck here until I can move out =[

The marks im not worried about as such, im constantly getting over 90% in PD, Biology and Chem and over 80% in Maths. So im fairly sure I can get a UAI/ATAR of over 90 (once I can find the 2U English course interesting, ie when pigs fly haha)

But Ive heard that theyre more likely to consider rural students over sydney/city students, thats what im really worried about :/

Thankyou for all your replies so far =]
