For most of us, we're bored/procastinating. As well as this, I enjoy having my views confronted by others, and sometimes that can be better achieved via a good thread than in a normal conversation, as people have time to think of an argument, and don't look like retards while they're thinking of what to say next.

Plus, some people don't have real friends, so they pretend that internet-pals count.
