Okay... currently I'm doing;
Advanced English Rank: 3/23 (class only)
Extension English: 11/20 (class only)
Legal Studies: 11/37
Ancient History: 2/18
Modern History: 2/40
Philosophy: 8/16 (Year 11 only)
Advanced Maths: 91/112

But, next year I'm probably going to do;
Advanced English
Extension 2 English
Legal Studies
Ancient History
Modern History
History Extension

it's only 11 units but I'm a bit worried about the workload, has anyone else done similar subjects for the HSC what do you think?

I'm definitely going to be picking up Maths Extension 2 but I would really like to take up Cosmology if the school will let me ^_^ (although I doubt this happening).

Unfortunately the school letting you do it is the least of your worries. The distinction courses might not run next year ={ :speechless:

But if they do i hope we both get in! :D

Okay, I've just skimmed through the last three pages, so pardon me if there's any crazies out there like me who are doing 15 units. :p

Yep, 15. Started out with 12, then for some reason picked up another 3!

So currently, I'm doing:
  • Advanced English
  • General mathematics
  • Legal studies
  • Modern history
  • Drama
  • Food technology
  • Economics
  • Preliminary extension English

The last two are the extra 3 units I picked up.

I am having pressure from my parents to drop down when I hit year 12...but I don't know! I very much enjoy all my subjects, I just don't know if I could drop any of them!

If I had to drop something, it would have to be ext. English...but I'm good at English, and, crazy as I am, I'm looking into 2-unit ext. Eng.

Yep, I must be crazy. :jaw:

I work anywhere between 8-20 hours per week as a casual at my local McDonald's, and the only time I really feel stressed out at school is when we have a rush of assessments, and still then I manage to make time for school and a bit of fun and relaxation.

So, maybe I'll just have to wait until term 4 this year before I make any decisions.

Any ideas guys?!

Do you know the requirements for the distinction courses and how to get into them... as long as they run?

I'd most likely be the first at my school to ever do/attempt a distinction course.

If anyone has some time, I'd like some advice please? My subjects are 3U Math, 3U English, Chemistry, Ancient History, French Cont and Chinese Cont, I really have no idea what I should drop/pick up. I love all my subjects and am doing pretty well in all of them.

Everyone's telling me I should do 4U Math because it'd scale well for me but I REALLY want to take 4U English, which is probably the weakest out of all my subjects. I also want to pick up two language extensions because I love languages and the scalings aren't bad :D but I know if I do all that without dropping, plus my extra ciricular activities, I'd drop dead so I'd just like to hear your advice and what you think about it...

Thanks in advance :D

The requirements are that you accelerated a HSC subject. Then you just apply though an application. The distinction course website is Distinction Course Program - Home
Ooooo, it looks so exciting! I bet it's absolutely insanely hard though :p...

Do you know where there is anymore information regarding the Distinction Courses for 2010?

I still don't think I'm getting good enough marks to qualify for the course xD oh well. I'd love to try it though.

Its easy to say that now, but i really would recommend dropping some classes in year 12, things never seem as fun when you barely have time to breath.

If you decide to do the full 15 units in year 12 you will probably find it quite challenging to continue working while maintaining good marks.

If I suggested it to a teacher they would probably either shrug at me and ask me what the course was xD or laugh at me because they would know the difficulty of it.

I'd be happy with just MX2 though.
Thats kinda the same at my school. When i asked a teacher about acceleration he basically said that nobody ever does it at our school and even if they were able then the time table would be to difficult to figure out! But here we are :D

And when i asked the head teacher of mathematics to accelerated from year 11 maths to year 12 maths (4 weeks after starting year 11 maths) he said that it wouldn't be possible and cant be done. But here we are.

The point of the matter is that if you let people convince you of something and dont fight for what you want then you wont get it. Who cares what they think! You do what you want.

I suggest you give it a shot, if you make the course you make the course. And if you dont you have lost nothing. So just give it a go.

Well I had to ask to be accelerated and the teacher said it would be hard work and impossible to timetable, but it happened. That was for 2unit and I wanted to accelerate MX1 as well (she thought I was mad), but also I made it and going okay... not the best, but improving.

My maths teacher has seen how much I enjoy maths (especially at the extension level) and thinks I can manage the MX2 course (even if I can't I'll stick to it) and I bet she could help convince the school to help me get into that cosmology course! I highly doubt my school has resources anywhere near as complex as other schools.

I think we have a telescope?

You really have to stop that before it becomes offensive or insulting to those of Asian ethnicity or background. + it's frustrating me seeing you post (spam) it everywhere.

You know, it is an external program, so its like distance ed. All you need for cosmology is what they give you. See, they send you a text book as well as work which you are supposed to complete.

There are 2 residentials were you go to Sydney and get on a coach and see all the spectacular observatories as well as attending lectures on cosmology. There is also a major assignment near the end of the course where you write an essay (i think 10,000 words?) on what ever topic in cosmology you like! That will be fun.

You need to lighten up.
Studying the aforementioned combination of subjects is something more to be proud of than a liability in itself by studying subjects such as General Maths, Society and Culture, etc.
