If someone is ranked in the top 3 for every subject in a school ranked in the low 500's, is it hard to achieve a UAI > 95? (with subjects MX2, MX1, ADV. ENG, PHYS, CHEM, SOR 1 UNIT)

i thought the rank of one's school has little to no affect on one's HSC Results?

School ranks change from year to year.
The cohort before me was ranked 300ish, mine was in the top 200 schools.
But then again, the year before me had a dux with a uai of 98.xx. But I was dux for my year and only got 96.50.
It just so happened that we had alot of students in the 90s (most of the year) but all closely grouped.

your school is an indicator, but it by no means will limit you

this.

my school was ranked 646th on 07 and in 08 the top 300

i achieved 95.25, there were others up to 98.65

your school ranking is a general indicator of the performance of the previous year and has no bearing on your results. its just a way to see how, with your schools facilities and teachers, people HAVE done in the past. apart from uai estimations, put it in the back of your mind and just work towards your personal goals

You sound like a kid at my school ^_^

Exact same subjects, but I'm not sure if my school is in the low 500s or not. I think last year it may have been in the mid 400s... a huge drop from the groups 2 year's ago! 276.

yeh our school is always around the bottom 300's however we usually get 2-3 ppl with 98+ and about a dozen with 90+. Sometimes its mainly due to the middle and bottom order of the school that the ranks become shocking.

Ranking = Ratio of Band 6s vs Non-Band 6s.
Which means a Band 1 and a Band 5 are counted as the same when it comes to school ranking.

tl;dr I CALL BULLSHIT

That is a little silly. The BoS is clearly far too lazy to spend the time to analyse the results properly :p... hehe. Make them work harder I say! No doubt the top 10 schools would barely vary at all though... There would only be like 1-5 band 5s XD haha.

Actually, if you take a look, James Ruse has something like 75% Band 6s.
And then at second place, Baulko has something like 50%.
Then it goes down veeeeeery slowly..
(From memory, don't blame me if I'm wrong)

Fat gap between first and second O.O

yeh thats what im saying. The mid-bottom order don't get a band 6 and hence dont benefit the school in rankings :bomb:

bit harsh i'd say
if their school has a bloody big cohort then the ratio becomes tiny

Yeah the gap is massive between first and 2nd and then it's neck and neck really but in the top 10 there's still a bit of breathign space. Ranks are determined by Band 6 Exam Results/Total Exams Sat. So that's why schools have like 1100 exams sat because each kid sits at least 5 exams.

umm, there all 96%+ with the exception of chem which is about 85%. yet this isnt including half-yearlies (ive only gotten physics 95% and MX1 96%). all about 1st-2nd (chem 3rd) rank

lets say i do extremely well in my given school (cumulative ranks of 1st's and 2nd's), does this mean that my HSC results will basically rely on my personal external performace?

Your school doesn't directly affect your UAI, however in terms of motivation, study environment, support, it does matter - and generally the selective/private/decent public schools provide that.

However, take my school as an example. Last year we dropped from 126 to 250 and our dux still managed to get 99.80 and we still managed to get over 30 people with a UAI over 90, so it's still possible, even at a low ranked school.

How many schools ARE there in the state?
Just to get a relative idea of where I'd stand.
My school barely scraped it into the top 100 last year and I'm facepalming - should I be?

Results scored by a kid in my school when it was ranked in the low 500's:

Mathematics Extension 1: 96%
Mathematics Extension 2: 94%
Physics: 94%
Advanced English: 93%

AND

Chemistry: 81%

These were what I believe to be his exam marks. I don't think he was ranked internally first in all of his subjects. His cohort was strong. His UAI was 98.25. He deliberately decided to bomb up in Chemistry because he was sure he was going to get the UAI he needed. Shame, his UAI could have been so much higher.
