Current job dilema, good to have during HSC? (1 Viewer)

Gday.

I currently have a job at the local cheap shop, its only one shift a week and only an hour and a half long after school. Its a family friends shop so its comfortable.

However, I only make $12 a week, yes ouch. I was getting more a Kfc but I enjoy this job alot more.

However, I was tinking of applying to the shopping center across the street, which pays better and provides more shifts, and still work at the store.

Is this wise during the HSC? I understand there needs to be balanced but would working two jobs be overwhelming even if my store job is only one shift a week?

I feel like I'm being greedy, doing it just for the money and I don't want end up regreting this decision. I do want to have a large focus on school this year.
But I am dearly struggling on $12 a week, seeing as it goes to tutoring each week, leaving me at mercy to my mum..

What should I do?

if you're good at time management then get the other job. however, if you're a serial procrastinator then i would advise against it. but bear in mind that if you dont get the other job and instead apply for a job after the hsc you are going to be competing with thousands of other students for a very limited number of jobs. also, the advantage of having a job during the hsc is that you are not dirt poor by the time you are at schoolies so you can afford to go out to clubs etc.

12bucks is pretty bad. but whether to get a new job or not is up to you. think about it if you need more money and have time to do more than one shift per week then yes get a new job. i was working during my final years at school but had to stop working in term 1 cos the shop that i worked in had to shut down. it didnt affect my studies at all.
anyway if you need more money then you will defenitely need a new job. but sometimes getting a new job isnt that easy. ok so if you do get a new job you can either quit the current place or do both but you will have to let your new employer know how many shifts you can do for a week. learn to manage your time between school and job.

true. i couldnt find a job very easily...i was unemployed for almost 6months even after finishing school. so yeah keeping a job in your hands might be a good thing. im not talking about your 12bucks a week job, i wouldnt even consider that as a job. you should be getting more than that from your parents!

But your not gona enjoy your schoolies with piss poor hsc result either...

I'd say if you want really well, then dont work. I quit my job at kfc to study... but i want a high result. Its ultimately personal preference.

But why should they? Most students doing the HSC are given accommodation, food, etc. free of charge. Why should the parents need to give them money as well?

maybe so they can go out, tutoring, etc...
cant expect hsc students to be only at home and school for the whole hsc year...

im at uni, running out of money and cant find a job, and my parents dont give me money, i was working my arse off in year 12 to save for uni

edit: sorry, very stressed, dont want to have to drop out of uni

Interesting, I like the idea of trying to get just weekend shifts.

I honestly hate letting people down, so I don't want to be called up for a shift and have school comitments. I would like to be committed to both.

My mum does'nt give me money, I've never had an allowance.. but I would never expect her to give me money. I hate asking for it, from anyone.

Thanks for the assist, I've got a better idea how to go about this situation.

Two jobs means that you will pay a higher tax rate on one (like close to 50% of it will go to tax).

You'd be better off finding another job, keep the one you have until you find another one though.

I think a job is helpful during the HSC as it provides a break from study and helps you better manage your time. If you go to uni you will find most of us work a fair bit along with full time study and cope fine. In fact uni requires more discipline than the HSC and the workload is even more time contrained. The world should not end because of the HSC, I balanced study with concerts, work, social life etc and did not regret it. As if you will be studying say on a Thursday night (perfect night to work in retail) or a Friday night (good time to take a break and socialise). I know far too many people who feel as if all the sacrifices weren't worth it as they spent their whole time studying and it didnt make that much of a difference.

Just don't burn yourself out is the moral of the story and dont underestimate the positive impact of R&R on your studies.

Balance is the key.
