enrty into medicine HELP!!! (1 Viewer)

i am so confused. i want to get into ANU (or any other uni it doesn't matter) and get into the course Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery, but i am unsure how to do it.
if i get a high enough UAI and UMAT score does that mean i am able to apply for the course or do i have to do an undergraduate course first?
could someone tell me how how it works?

For ANU you have to do an undergraduate course first no matter how good your scores because its a gradaute entry course. ANU offers provisional entry which guarantees your entry into MBBS after 3 years given you maintain a certain score that the faculty determines in the undergraduate degree and pass the GMAT (ie get 50 and above in all the sections).

the course is called a provisional entry scheme, but no place is guaranteed. first of all, they do not use the umat as a means of selection. u need a UAI of 98.5+ or equivalent to be considered for entry (OP1 required for Qlders). once u achieve this, they offer you an interview. I got offered one, but didnt attend so cant really tell u exactly how its structured. from what i hear, there are multiple stations and a group discussion which will be observed and assessed (slightly similar to the UWS interview). based on this, you are offered a place at the anu in an undergraduate course of your choice for which you have made the cutoff. after you complete the undergraduate course, you are required to sit the GAMSAT and obtain competitive results. as the poster above said, u need a MINIMUM of 50. you definitely need higher to be competitive. This result, along with your GPA is taken into consideration and you compete for places against the other graduate applicants.
I will reiterate that their provisional entry has no guarantee, unlike unis such as UQ where a standard is set and once those standards are met, a place is guaranteed. they make it seem like you will be guaranteed a place if you get a GPA of 5.0 and 50 in all sections of the GAMSAT which is not the case. this is the bare minimum and you probably wont make it in with these scores.
They fail to make this clear on the website, however, in the letter they send you offering you an actual interview in january, the true conditions of entry become clear.
imo, its def not worth it unless its your only option or u live in canberra and want to stay home for uni. you really have to work hard for those 3/4 years in your undergrad degree to get a high GPA and also revise for the GAMSAT. and if you flunk out on the gamsat or dont have a high enuff GPA, you have just done the 3/4 years for nothing.
undergrad at monash is the way to go.

And provisional entry scheme is quiet misleading. Besides not having to do the interview again there is no other real advantage in it. I dont think its worth it unless ur a med hopeful in the act that fails the umat.

Ditto to what the others have said about ANU. Don't be fooled by "provisional" entry because there is NO guarantee. The only plus is no interview. But if you apply for every other med in aus and you don't get in, then ANU is definitely an option because if anything, it is a good uni, has good funding and resources and it's med degree is fair.

But definitely apply for interstate because it's a new experience and it'll be worth it - that's what i and a lot of my friends did.

So there's a fair few to go. Every uni needs the UMAT except for JCU but ALL the unis require an interview and high UAIs (95> for most of them) and will put into account your UMAT, interview and UAI equally.

JMP, UTAS and UWS has a benchmark of the UMAT and if you don't get over this, you won't be called for an interview, no matter what UAI you get.

I know that UNSW will look at your UAI in comparison to your UAI, but it is still extremely hard to get in.

The main aim is to do well in your UMAT and if not, JCU is always an option (and shouldn't be looked at as the "last resort" because it is, as i have heard, the 3rd best uni for med in australia and is still hard to get in - write a good application form as it counts a lot for getting the interview).

Griffith also offers provisional course, same as ANU.

If you're going interstate, remember to apply for colleges (on-campus accommodation) early - it makes everything so much easier.

Thanks for calling me a n00b, hahahahaha. it's funny how i can come across as a n00b by what i write. =P after spending hours reading up and sending out applications, one does learn about apps for med. My friend tells me it takes 10 000hrs to become a pro in something.

If you do well in your UAI but don't hit the UMAT benchmark, UWS will send you an email after your UAI comes out asking you to do B.Science Adv as after a year, you can do an interview and transfer into 2nd year med the following year, but it's no guarantee.

UQ, USyd, UMelb are basically, get 99.95-100 and well done, you could get a place in the combined place for med. I wanted to do that, but sadly, few of us are of such a great intellect =P But go for it, especially USyd has a great med course, i hear. But for those, you need to do the first course (e.g. med science, arts, music), but you're actually guaranteed a place for their postgrad program after you finish the course.

If all else fails, many i know do a gap year and reapply to the unis later.

Especially when you bust your ass for 2 years, achieve a WAM of 83, UMAT of 182, get offered an interview and then a month after get an email saying your acceptance in to the lateral transfer scheme was unsuccessful
My advice- if you get an interview throw your honesty out the window for a few hours, I was calm and tried to give real honest answers for the questions. Some of my friends with lower WAMs and UMATs just acted outlandish, like they are really into reaching out and helping all members of society and they got in.

Then again, it's not like anyone who gets 99.95/100.00 bombs out and doesn't get the required credit average. (Re: USyd; who gives a shit about the others, they're not in NSW.)

B Med Sci is shit; unsuccessful transfer into medicine, or entry into graduate-entry med, essentially equates to you've dug your own grave, which you thought to be otherwise, rather idyllic, and now, now that you've either brilliant enough to get a GPA near 5.5 (more like 6.0 and beyond), do a Masters, if not a PhD, or die.
... it's scrawled all over the agriculture/psychology tute room.

Psychology lolz... It's a generic course in psychairtry for the stupidz
- the referrals and med-scriptn therefore gh3y... Those who complete psych usually end up working in a 3x3m dump asses'n drunks n druggies 4 centrelink

Medsci provides the student wit indepth knowledge of the natural sciences which is highly regarded by employers, depending on the major too, u may land a job with a pharmcutikal company developing revolutionary drugs... The propects are endless,,, the reason y most medsci graduates end up jobless is becuz they didn't focus dying their studies or aren't looking hard enough... Btw I'm high so ignore this post if it fails to make sense...

Psychology =/= psychiatry; they're quite different, actually.
Neuro - psychiatry - psychology; from most science-y to most artsy-fartsy.

ok look ill green you becuz u tried and obviously this rep business is important to you...im in the red becuz people dont like to hear/see wtf is truth, k (e.g. the lady in ncap looks like hanson, end of story k snap, case closed... ugly). Anyway,

lucid, psych and psychi dont differ greatly, look into it yourself.... the ability to refer (xray, specialist etc) and prescribe is, generally speaking, the differences.... oh and that psych(ologists) usually end up working for centrelink... dont mean to hit anyones nervez but if youre indeed studying psych, your job prospects outside the government sector is nil...

It's up to the uni's discretion as to how many people they actually let in...it could be all 10% places up on offer [say 15], or it could be 3.
