Ha. It was actually Orwell who said that simple was best.
I thought Orwell advocated simple (i.e. precise) language, not simple ideas.

true.

but what he was saying was basically that a piece of writing should never FEEL complex, no matter how deep it is. It should always (like hemingway's) be able to be understood by a child yet still be able to astound an adult.

i would think Animal Farm exemplifies that sentiment. Simple premise. Simple terms. But its depth and execution is astounding. Fuck i love that book.
I have never heard of year 9/10s being asked to read and understand Dostoyevsky. Contrasted to him, yeah, Orwell is simple.

Some funny and rather poignant observations about how fucking retarded modern society can be.

The Time Traveller's Wife
The Power of Now
Conversations with God
Catch 22
Buying a Fishing Rod for My Grandfather. This one is so boring, well it's a series of short stories, but the last one.. i can't get through it. It's just a whole lot of different seemingly random desciptions.
but Time Travellers wife is marvellous!

Five Quarters of the Orange by Joanne Harris (author of Chocolat)... have just started so I don't know what to make of it yet
I've just finished Priestess of the White, and The Magician's Guild before that by Trudi Canavan... apparently she lives in Melbourne. I'm slowly becoming a fan of her books. Really nice fantasy books
