My friends and I want to start a study group.
There will be four-six of us and we all do different subjects.
We will be doing individual study.

Any tips/advice for study groups where the students aren't studying the same subject together? Thanks.

There was already a major discussion on this topic, although i think a group was formed already... I don't get how a study group is called a study group when everyone is working individually,, benefits of study groups are that you get to learn from other people,, otherwise might as well work at home.

Incentives to study.
Whoever is voted most distracting or whatever has to write up a page of study notes for everyone in the group on AOS.

It depends where you are. If you study in a library no one can make huge amounts of noise, so as long as you are there with serious friends it would probably go well. At someones house there are more distractions but you can have discussions on topics going and help each other out more.

Well, how do you know? When I went to my own study group with some other mates from here, we worked quite effectively together even thugh at times we didn't.

And yeah, social stuff comes in but the study group is supposed to motivate each other too.

Study groups don't really go well in my school. I have a study group at the nearby library every Wednesday but we always end up using one hour in the food court and then mucking around or staring into space for the remainder of the time in the library.

Yeah, sometimes it is better to find a library that isn't attached to a mall or something. At least that way there are less options to bludge.
Making a really tight schedule is important.
And yes, sometimes someone does have to be the one to force everyone to work.
Smaller groups can be better. Sometimes working with different subjects is too much effort and can waste time. Getting a couple of people of similar skill level is generally the easiest thing to do.

I realised that after six months, even when we were working in the reserve section of the library, I was still distracted. As for finding a library that isn't attached to a mall is kind of hard.

Yeah - that's not attatched to a mall.
Instead you end up walking for like 15 minutes to get to one

I've been part of a study group - and it's worked for me. It's mainly where everyone does their own work and when anyone needed help then we could ask around.

Study groups are near impossible for me.

Living out bush and one hour drive from civilisation is quiet an annoyance.

My parents own a restaurant and so we're planning to hold it in there for a couple of hours before we open for the evening.

There won't be any distractions, thank goodness.
I think it will work well, but two of our six have already said that they can't do it.
I hope it doesn't suck with four people or less.

Have rules so everyone turns up regularly, keeps focused etc

Have timed breaks ie: 5 minutes every hour to gossip/talk/go for a walk/ internet break. It sounds stupid but if you dont time it you'll talk for ever.

Have games where you test each other on topics.

My friend and I used to have chip days/ picnic/ macca's study sessions so we werent whinging for food.

Oh gosh, Study Groups never work for me because I study better on my own and not in a library *shivers*

Haha - I think they didn't work for you because of the people you were around and sitting next to.

As I've mentioned before - I am a firm believer of Study Groups and I think they work very well. But of course you'd expect a bit of procrastination and talking - but you can counter that by designating set breaks and having goals for the day.

At school when I'm alone in the library, I still cannot work. It's the library that gives me the chills. I wonder why I hate the library so much :mad1:

LMAO let's work in the shopping mall next time yeah?

Oh and study groups work for me. I get heaps more work done even though there is some socialising because other distractions like anime aren't there

If you're doing different subjects, i recommend doing a subject that at least one other person can help you with in case you need help.

I dunno - I find studying with friends helpful. They can help you and can help motivate you.

Also you can arrange to do something afterwards, giving you something to look forward to.

The state library's next to the State parliament house, just about a 15 minute walk along macquarie st. from St. James station.

Depends where you are living. Even Castle Towers' Library is across the road and away a bit, which does the trick.
