Do you ever use your understanding of atwood machines and solving those types of questions from year 11 in year 12?

Not really for Physics, I haven't seen any atwood questions at all in advanced mechanics (since its broken up to 3 parts mainly being Projectile Motion, Circular Motion and Orbits/space stuff). It seems only exclusive to Dynamics. That being said, I would still consider it valuable for the nicher parts of MX2 Mechanics - there are atwood machine questions there which seem to be tricky but just rely on the same principles you used in Year 11 Physics but more complicated.

Since you already have a good understanding about how atwood machines work, you will be way better prepared for such questions since you're already in a good habit with force diagrams + you know how to solve those type of questions.
