Do you think it's worth applying for jobs now, or should I wait until after New Year's?

Ive tried most retail joints and they all give me the same dosage of "We've just hired .. Sorry", Could always try but I wouldnt hold your breath for this christmas week in retail

There aren't really many jobs advertised, but I'm thinking more along the lines of just walking into random shops and asking...whether they'd be recruiting so close to Xmas.

Personally I'm waiting til the new year to start seriously looking. Why do you want to be hunting for a job this close to christmas and new year anyway? Relax and enjoy the festive season, I say.

most of the places I have gone into have been like, welll we're not hiring until the new year but, we'll take your resume and let that rot in some drawer until we need someone. so yeah, take it in and hope they need some one soon.

Have to agree with that point although with a UAI as good as rench's you can understand if it was included if nothing but to highlight the hard work and good work ethic and because you how proud you would be.

Look with job hunting I know that shops are not really hiring for Christmas period as that was done a month or two ago but I have a friend going for a job interview today at a major department store so their is hope. Good luck with the job hunting!

look, you freak, I went to a really shithouse school and that's what I've been doing, going out with my resumes and being stared down by lucky people who have already got jobs, and strange Indian managers with a disconcerting habit of looking over people's heads. I've already applied online for those places. So damn me with my stuck up attitude.

hey rench... wait till after you get an idea about your uni timetable.. that way you'll have the hours to work with and that way it save you he trouble of negotiating later..

Practical experience will always benefit a person infinitely more than their academic results. I can tell you that a resume listing previous work experience will look far more favourable than a resume listing only academic achievements. An employer doesn't really care if you were dumb as a sack of rocks at school, just that you're competent enough to do the job required.

exactly, if you're applying for a position in retail, the employer wants only to know that you are personable and have previous experience. most likely rench will be working with people vastly inferior to him in intellignece, but whom the manager hired regardless.

School results means nothing in the world of low-end jobs. Some dumb fuck whose been working at Maccas for the past 3 years will seem more preferable to employers than you 100 UAI'ers.

Yea. I haven't worked before, but I have done work experience so at least I have something up my sleeve. My main concern is that I haven't actually worked in retail before and because I'm already 17 (18 in Feb.) I'm not going to look as favourable as a 15 y.o. who can do the job but who is cheaper to hire....

Albeit, I reckon I can pick up stuff pretty quickly...operating a cash register and stuff + I don't think my customer service skills would be too bad

mmm, though as a uni student you have the advantage of flexible working hours...at the maccas at which i previously worked, they'd put the uni students on during weekdays and the high-school kids on the weekend...so i wouldn't worry too much

That was just my experience when I was jobless and applying at pre-uni. I did NOT go to ruse.

That woman said she's WILL give me a call because shes wants uni people to control the kids, she said that she was prepared to 'sack' the yr 11 ruse kid to give me a try.. never eventuated.

I also handed out resumes to most places in the shopping centre. they asked.. do you have any cash registers experience? I had none - 0 calls. (I was going for my 1st job)

a few months later, big w gave me a ring...

I'll be quitting big w in a few weeks time for a acct cadetship.. and I'll give them the best, most apprieciative resignation letter that they will ever read. They're the best people.

Have you tried Job Hunting for a day at Westfields Chatswood, or Hornsby? Just went the other day, and saw a couple of stores advertising vacancies.
