I was thinking in enrolling in a unit for winter school, but I've looked at the page of units available during the Winter vacation period and there seems to be the types of units like language residential units or PACE type units or internships.

I'm a first year and I was hoping there would be a greater variety of units as I wanted to take some media units to decide later on if I want to make that into a major rather than wasting time in the normal semester and then having to extend my degree because I was unable to do it in the break. (http://www.handbook.mq.edu.au/2016/Units/UGByOffering/WV+Day)

Is this usually the types of units available in the winter break only or do they release more units later?

Winter vacation units are limited due to the fact the teaching period is very short (only 4 weeks or less) between the two main semesters. To reduce a 13 week subject into 4 is difficult, which is why these are mostly units which are more practical than theory, like intern ships.

Generally unit availability is released at the start of the year, so there probably will not be additional units added at this stage.

Session 3 (summer school) offers many more units which can be found here: http://www.handbook.mq.edu.au/2016/Units/UGByOffering/S3+External and here: http://www.handbook.mq.edu.au/2016/Units/UGByOffering/S3+Day

Summer school is general 6-7 weeks, so more units are offered. Session 3 also tends to have more units added during the year, based on demand and staff availability.

The other thing to note is you probably should not do multiple units over summer and winter semesters. Because your classes are so condensed, you will probably have 3-4 lectures and tutorials/practicals a week, often with compulsory attendance and more frequent assessments. You are literally condensing the units into half or less of the normal teaching period.

I hope that helps.
