Hi, can someone please explain what is the purpose of Owen using sonnets in his poems 'Anthem' and Futility''.
Somehow, I explain it as "sonnet structure of a poem usually portrays love and beauty, however, in his poem, it deals with death, destruction and dehumanisation". Is this an irony??

The use of a sonnet structure in poetry would generally imply/connote emotions of love and beauty, but Owen contradicts this with the violent imagery of 'machine guns'. For 'Futility' you can say it's an elegiac poem that mourns the loss of a soldier to the cold, thus highlighting the futility/senselessness of the human sacrifice.
