happiness? its pretty pathetic when money, prestige etc are of more importance to someone than their own happiness. unless they are so short sighted to believe that money and prestige can buy happiness and love!

I got an offer for med at monash. My parents are from the subcontinent and wanted me to do med. Instead I chose to do something I would enjoy instead since thats something money cannot buy.

Another friend of mine, a sri lankan was pretty much forced by his parents to do dentistry. he didnt get in and was devastated. not because he wanted to do dent but cause his parents pretty much looked upon him as a failure. now hes sitting in qld doing med away from his family and unhappy as hell.

another thing I should prolly let you guys know.

I work casual at crown casino, in the VIP rooms. the number of asian doctors and lawyers that come there every week to gamble the weekend away is pretty astonishing.

so much money and so well educated yet they looked so unhappy:confused:

Because I can. That's the only definite reason. There's a whole bunch of other crap, like "it's always changing, I'll never get bored" but the only one I'm absolutely sure about is I can and most other people can't.

Yes, I'm a chronic showoff. Look at me, look at me.

i don't really understand the whole thing with 'doctors get a tonne of money'. The last time i checked, it took like 15 years to get the >100K pay. And interns get like 40K, which is not that great when you compare the pay you could be getting as an actuary or a lawyer.

i would love to do med because 1. i love science 2. i love the amount of interaction with different people each day 3. and yes as corny as it sounds i would love to make a difference, i don't want a job where i'm using super computer skills to help make games on mobiles etc.
and yeah i just don't think its worth all the years and effort if your doing medicine just for the money.

i'm doing med because it suits me in many ways and i'm pretty passionate about it, i'd like be involved in creating ways to deliver healthcare in areas of conflict, or remote places where there are no dr's.
but if i were more intelligent i think i'd like to do particle physics or cosmology...
as for impressing the girls. i'm a girl and was not impressed when some dr. tried impress me the other day by being a dr. MOST dr's i know are pretty boring, think they know everything when they don't even read books, and aren't really passionate about anything... (although i do know some cool ones too).
but when i meet someone who is totally passionate about what they do and they say their a physicist or aerospace engineer or they're building a quantum computer or something or learning to speak their 5th language...and trying to change the world...that's impressive.
you should do what you love!

lol, and you didn't even notice a slight hint of sarcasm in my response? Not even the slightest, most insignificant indication of a rebellious post?

Alvin: yeh, it's all about the ho's and the gateway to drugs

Mmm. That simpsons episode where Dr Nick does the bypass on Homer was on last night...

Dr Nick (with no idea what he is doing because his instruction video was taped over with something else): "Calm down, Nick. Just think back to medical school."

[Flashback of a college party with hippies and hotties]

Dr Nick (to young hottie): "Seriously, baby, I can prescribe anything I want!"

"The most rewarding part was when he gave me my money." I love Dr Nick :)

Kartman: You can give me the "I want to be happy" drivel but we all gave up on that at the age of 4. Money (and by implication sex and drugs) makes the world go round...

1. There is quite a lot of rote in medicine with no to little scientific basis.. especially in clinical skills.. consider clubbing of the fingertips.. fun to look at.. but there is mostly a statistical link to disease..
basically http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clubbing

2. yes ull love it soooo much... why dun u consider retail? :)

3. I dont think medicine is the only way to achieve this..

u should also consider.. Nursing.. cos ure description is also good for nursing
and not so many years..

Studying Medicine, and the thought of practising Medicine DOES make ME happy.
That's reason enough. It should be at the top of your list.

There are a lotta people out there who do want to get in and practise medicine for the right reasons.

I've heard alcoholism and suicide is high in the doctor population. I hope none of you end up like them coz you're not happy in medicine.
