My teacher always deducts all but one mark for not writing chemical equation...

They fucking screwed my internals, for what as well?

Often I’ve found that in schools they will deduct marks for things like not drawing graphs in pencils (in graphs) and not writing equations, when in the hsc that doesn’t matter so much.
But definitely get in the habit of writing equations where possible, that way you’ll still get marks if you mess up the question (i.e. some relevant information)

If the same criteria applied to everyone in your class then your internals didn’t really get changed since everyone was marked to the same standard.

Also even in this question, although it doesn’t say in the marking criteria, if you had done nothing else but written the chemical equation, you would have gotten one mark since you‘re giving extra information, unless the equation was already given in the question.

Also, these small things like not writing the equation, not boxing in your tables or not doing drawings in pencil, really matter for higher 5/6/7/8/9 mark questions since the final marks are normally harder to get and depend on these small things.

every year the hsc marks differently, maybe in this case since the question was pretty hard they relaxed the marking and didn't penalise for not including an equation
in your internals your teachers are (probably) trying to ensure you follow best practice so they might mark harsher

wtf ☹

the hsc wont be marked retarded like this right? or they should be sued.

Meanwhile it says on the timetable "If you use a pencil to complete any graphs/diagrams please ensure that it is 2B." "If" implying it is optional. Lol wtf, I never actually noticed they wanted us to write with pencil. I didn't get deducted in physics for using pen anyway.

I think the only reason it says "Draw diagram using pencil" is that they never changed from the old syllabus

It's also funny how subjective our HSC marking criteria is even for seemingly objective stuff like calculations. In the VCE and A Level, they follow a strict marking scheme. It literally depends on the markers mood to consider if ur stuff "Provides most steps (3)" than "Provide some steps (2)"

maybe it's just a case of marking criteria? like how you're recommended to get the significant figures right on every question, but it's not always part of the marking criteria (it's only guaranteed to be in one question per paper, but since you never know which one you just try and get it right for all of them)

sucks that you lost the marks tho :( :(

All this stuff IS actually part of the syllabus under working scientifically, There's specific ways to do things that may or may not result in losing marks based on what the question is assessing and its mark allocations.

For example if it's an explain question and you decide to draw a diagram or table to support your answer you won't be penalised on not including labels properly or a title or boxing in the table, since that's not the main aim of the question.

However, if it's a question specifically asking to draw a table or diagram, they then specifically want to assess your scientific working and will likely deduct marks for not including labelling, using a ruler, boxing in tables or underlining titles.

It's all part of the syllabus and makes complete sense.

They also made us write the formula Q = MCAT in its naked form despite it, one, being on the formula sheet, two, literally why do we need to write it?

I doubt it’s marked down, that’s what I was told. For boxing in tables, even less likely.

it definitely shouldn't either. are u telling me the question was so surface level u had to nitpick on useless year 8 crap like drawing tables ☹💀

I must say I’ve never been told at any point in high school OR primary school that tables had to be boxed in. That being said add it in now that you know, just to be safe.

The timetable includes ALL exams? Like maths which doesn’t require pencils?

You probably wont get marked down. It’s just a strong suggestion cuz especially with graphs you may mess up and it’s not ideal to draw a new graph

Fuck Independent papers. The teachers say they are just following their retarded marking criteria.

"5 Marks correct calc and correct chemical equation. 2 marks partially correct or correct calc and wrong or no chemical equation"

you see how unfair this is, right? Nothing differentiating me from a loser who barely even did the question at all

Yeah, the independent trial papers from t sydney schools on thsc for example have crazy marking criteria that should not at all be barring students from getting top marks even though it does.
I had a look at a math advanced paper from James Ruse and it said for one of the questions (it was a max/min stat point question) that students specifically HAD to write out each calculation for (e.g.) f(0.5) and students that didn’t lost one-two marks. I’m glad I didn’t go to a top sydney school that had to use semantics that not even a rigorous math class in university like real analysis would expect you to do.

Point is, hsc isn’t like that.

Lol, are you kidding me? This is legit year 7 stuff, why does Independent want to see us write down trivial steps, steps that are intended to be done with calculator?

Yeah idk, but I do know from seeing marking criteria and everything that they won’t be unreasonable. Plus, at least two markers mark your work and if there’s a large enough discrepancy a third marker comes in to mark it (otherwise it’s just the average I think, but don’t quote me on that).
That being said, I got a high band 5 in chem (89 😭) so yeah, they might still be a bit harsher than I thought lol (but then they’re harsher on everybody).
