if your final ranking is 6th and you do badly in hsc do you automatically get the marks of the person that came 6th? does that basically mean no matter what i get to be 6th?
No. You get a mark reflective of your performance in school. At school, you do assessments that contribute to a final mark. That mark will get adjusted. But, importantly, if your mark is close to first, then your adjusted mark will also be close to first. If you are closer to last, then your adjusted mark will be closer to last.
You do
not get the mark of the student who achieved the 6th highest exam mark.
