I had a look at secret.com.au... its prices are still more expensive than fluidtek's

There's like a $10 difference between the Hard disks, $50 between the CPUs, $30 between the DVD burners... much more on video cards. I could go on forever.

Have a look at www.fluidtek.com.au/webcontent46.htm

That page is so good, that only 1 week ago, the price of a Pioneer 108D went down from $128 to $115 today.

Try http://www.umart.com.au/ . Good site for building computers, but if you're more comfortable with a computer store, then build a computer at umart, print out the quote, and ask if the computer store you want can beat it.

They'll ususally get it a bit cheaper so you'll go with them and not the original quoting company :D

Before I was sure I was going to get a computer, my computer hardware knowledge dated back to the time of GeForce 4 MX 440's and AMD Athlon XP1800+'s
Now since I am getting a new computer, I've done my research and have updated my comp knowledge quite a bit. After doing this research, I found that I have marked fluidtek as a benchmark for prices.
So I advise you to do some research as well, if you have time that is. Hey, it's really interesting learning about it :D

As for your system, it depends on what you want to use it for... I suppose you could go with a P4.

Constructing your own system can let you create a 'better-end' system than those cheapy ones at the local computer stores that use (yuck) generic everything.

Basically, you can create a mid-high end system for about 1500 bucks. Add a bit more if you want a sexy LCD.

Have a check here

It should give you a general idea about what to expect. Assuming you are not a hardcore gamer that would like Doom 3 on the highest settings (cool if you would though XD), just minus a hundred bucks or two from one of the pre-stated systems and viola! That's uh... pretty much what you would get :S

Dell loses!

AMD Athlon 64 3200+ (S939) $257.40
Asus A8V Deluxe (VIA K8T800Pro/939) $212.30
Generic 512Mb PC3200 DDR Ram $117.70 X2
6800( non ultra) 128Mb $400
Antec Sonata Piano Black Tower $167.20
WD 80Gb 7200RPM Hard Disk $80.30
and a 17" flat crt ~$170

My dear God... she most definitely does NOT need a bloody 6800 ultra. Not even I would get that thing. Nope, a Radeon 9600SE is good enough for all her gaming needs. If you say the 9600 is gay, you're wrong. I have a GF4 MX440 and it can run uh... nearly everything. Considering the 9600 is three times the cost of the card I have now, it's more than enough, and it's only $120~

512 DDR is enough for her I suppose. Not like she needs to have 2 games, Photoshop, and Windows Media Player running all at the same time. Spend a bit more cash on a 120 gig HDD. It's only like 30 bucks extra. I think she can spend the rest on a nice LCD because for some reason chicks get horny over em :p
