so i am currently running off a slow 16gb usb flash drive

bios can detect usb flash drives and boot from them

but no hdds can be detected, tried many sata and ide/pata, none work

and usb external hdds don't work and neither does esata or firewire

So you are running off a USB at this moment? Well, have you tried booting in the system with linux and access disk utility. Then you could see if something has gone wrong.

yes i am running elementaryos (ubuntu derivative) from a flash drive

but since nothing besides usb flash drives are detected in bios, this lies much deeper than simply a software problem

i'm thinking the sata and pata controllers are dead (why both at the same time? coincidence?)

but i'm puzzled that even usb external hdds don't work, they have their own controller so should theoretically be independent of the motherboard's controller?
