What is the difference between addition and multiplication in this probability question?

I keep getting confused...

A ID is made by choseing 3 letter from A-C inclusive and 2 digits from 1-2, The letters cannot repeat but the digits can be used more than once, how many different IDs can be issued.

The answer is ???
(3 x 2 x 1) times (2 x 2) or (3x2x1) + (2x2)

How do we explain the addition one^^^^^^ ??

For EACH choice of letters, there are 4 choices of numbers.
Since there are 6 ways of choosing the letters, there are 6 x 4 ways of choosing the ID
