I just finished my HSC this year and was recently approached by a classmate to tutor her sister in English, who is going onto year 9 next year. Tutoring hadn't even crossed my mind before and I honestly don't know if I'll be any good at it. We're both willing to trial it though, so here I am with the question: what should I teach?

Since it wouldn't be that useful to go all HSC on the poor girl, especially since modules and area of studies would have changed by the time she gets there, I'm at a bit of a loss at what to teach her.

What I've got in mind so far is:
- helping out with school assessments and homework when necessary
- build essay and narrative writing skills
- get familiar with answering unseen text questions
- a bit of wide reading
- eventually go through school certificate layout/questions

In time, I'd start getting her in the right mindset for HSC English, because her parents would like her to do extension 1. I've got ideas on some activities, but don't know if I can do them for over a term.

So the question: as pre-HSC students, what do you guys expect from your English tutor, whether you have one or not? How do you like lessons to be structured? Anything that makes you go 'whoa, this is helpful', or 'man, I wish they'd stop doing that'?
