why is it that umarried couples (homo OR hetero) can't adopt a child.. yet single homo OR hetero can.. wouldnt it be in the better interests of the child to be adopted by the 'defacto' couples and hence have a more nuclear-style family and greater financial support?

Adoption law has some of the most varied standards, particularly if you wish to adopt internationally, in which case you have to not only meet domestic laws, but also the ones of the State the child initially comes from, in which case many States will not allow single people or homosexual couples to adopt.
